Practice Makes Perfect
by, Rushlight

"All right," Ryan said, struggling to keep a straight face and succeeding for the most part. "Let's take it from the top."

Colin nodded sagely and took his place at the side of the room. It took a lot of effort to break through Ryan's stoic "game-face", but it was a challenge he enjoyed immensely. Maybe it said something about his maturity level that he could feel so triumphant whenever he managed to make the other man crack a smile.

Then again, he was a grown man who got paid to jump around on a stage and act goofy with his best friend. Maybe maturity wasn't really an issue.

"From the top," he echoed, shaking out his arms to limber them up.

They were in one of the studio's high-ceilinged equipment storage rooms, which was currently unoccupied except for the two of them. The technicians wouldn't come in until later that afternoon to start preparing for the evening's show. For now, it was sufficiently out of the way for two professional comics to try out their new lines on each other in relative peace and quiet.

"Ah, Rapunzel," Ryan said without warning, stepping into the center of the room and staring at Colin with moony eyes. "I've ridden through dangers unnumbered to come here to your castle to rescue you."

Damn him for automatically casting Colin the role of the girl again. Colin caught the bemused glint in the other man's eyes and determined then and there to be quicker off the bat this evening and make Ryan wear the metaphorical dress for a change.

"My prince," he said in a trembling falsetto, draping his arm across his forehead dramatically as if he were a swooning princess. "Thank goodness you're here! This confinement has been most distressing...."

They proceeded to act out the scene one improvised line at a time, each of them working off the other to ever more improbable heights of idiocy. Colin was feeling the buzz of knowing they had a show that evening, but even through the adrenaline rush he could tell that he and Ryan were "in synch" today. It was truly transcendent when it was like this between them, each of them struggling to outmatch the other, only to find that they couldn't because the other had already anticipated him.

"M-my lady," Ryan stammered, barely able to talk through the laughter that shook him. Colin felt a stab of fierce glee at having managed to shake his composure so visibly. "My lady, allow me to escort you back to your homeland, where perhaps you will do me the honor of becoming my bride."

Colin was still breathing hard from the exertion of pretending to fight off a fire-breathing dragon at Ryan's side. "Well," he said offhandedly, brushing imaginary dust off the hem of his "dress". "I'll need to know what's in it for me. Underneath all this hair and glamour, I truly am quite shallow."

It looked for a moment as if Ryan would be unable to continue, his efforts to hold his laughter in making his entire body shake. Colin allowed himself a glimmer of triumph at the thought that he'd actually managed to win their unstated competition when Ryan unexpectedly grabbed his head in both hands and kissed him.

Flash of giddy heat, soft mouth, moist tongue sliding sensuously over his lower lip. Colin's breath caught in his throat as Ryan leaned against him, putting his all into it. Honestly, the man was quite a good kisser. The fact that most men didn't know that about their best friends crossed his mind briefly.

The kiss went on for a lot longer than it probably would have in front of the cameras. Colin knew that Ryan was trying to shake him and simply went with the flow. Over the years, he'd kissed Ryan almost as much as he'd kissed his wife (well, not really, but it seemed that way sometimes), so that it had become almost familiar. Comforting, on some bizarre level. The fact that both of them remained relentlessly unfazed by these encounters probably hinted at some heretofore unexplored aspect of their sexuality, but really, Colin couldn't be disturbed by it. After all, if you couldn't let your hair down (metaphorically speaking) with your sexually ambiguous best friend on occasion, what was the point of life?

There was a logic to that assessment, he was sure, even if it was currently escaping him.

Finally, Ryan leaned back, his eyes glittering. There was a heightened flush to his cheeks that was almost invisible under the harsh overhead lighting, his pupils wide and dark. Colin swallowed hard at the sight of him.

"Well, my lady?" Ryan said in his softest, most seductive voice. The effect was marred only slightly by the laugh crinkles around his eyes.

It took Colin a moment to remember that he was supposed to be in character. "Impressive," he said, collecting himself with an effort. "But can you dance?"

The rest of the scene passed without incident. Colin wrapped it up without much thought, still riding the performance high. It never ceased to amaze him how easy it all was with Ryan. Colin was never happier than when it was just the two of them, responding to each other in increasingly ludicrous ways until it all seemed more like a bizarrely scripted dance than a piece of off-the-cuff improvisation.

"We have got to work some of those lines into the show tonight," Ryan said when they were finished. He pushed one of the chairs they'd used back under the table, shaking his head with a low chuckle.

"Yeah." Colin grinned, using his palm to brush scuff marks off the table where he'd climbed on it. "Just remember we're owned by Disney, though. You'll have to keep some of your flashier moves at home."

Ryan smirked, the glint in his eyes sharpening. "Yeah, like you were so adept at keeping your hands to yourself during the last show."

Colin felt his face heat as he remembered the last performance they'd taped, in which he'd been "someone who suspects that people are not the sex they claim and is finding out to be sure."

"Hey, it seemed like a good idea at the time," he said weakly, unable to hold back a grin at the memory.

"Uh-huh." Ryan held the door open for him and ushered him through with a courtly gesture, as if Colin were still the fairy princess and he the knight in shining armor. "Wanna go get something for lunch?"

Colin gave him the evil eye, or at least as evil an eye as he could make while he was chuckling. Tonight for sure, Ryan was going to be the girl for a change; he'd have to find some way to work it out with Drew. "Sure."

Ryan's eyes flashed a challenge at him as he passed by, and Colin knew in his heart that his friend was going to find a way to repay him on national TV for the groping incident at the last taping.

Oddly enough, Colin was looking forward to it.

Love the last line! So sweet!

Did you add it to the memories, by any chance so that people can look it up later by author, title, pairing, etc?

no no no, you're not doing anything wrong.

i suspected this might happen. What it is, is that only the mods can add things to memories - so I'll just have to go and file each post under memories for you guys. No worries though, I'll go do that now. :D
