Ok, I recently watched the 100th episode of the US Whose Line and "ding" this idea popped into my head! I actually wrote this while I was inbetween chapters of "Obsession" - I needed a change! Hope you enjoy it....comments are very much appreciated :o)
Drew had thrown a huge party at a posh LA hotel for the entire cast and crew of Whose Line to mark the 100th episode. It was a huge achievement in the industry to make it to a hundred shows and was considered proof of a show's success. Many shows tried and failed to get there so it was cause for celebration.
"I'd like to make a toast," Drew said loudly and everyone gathered around him. "We've officially made it to a hundred shows and it's down to each and every one of you. I'd like to say thank you, it's been a blast, and here's to the next hundred." He raised his glass and everyone else did the same, shouting, "The next hundred," and cheering loudly.
Drew went around the room to see everyone and thank them personally for their hard work. When he finally reached Ryan, Colin, and Greg, they were laughing about the 100th taping earlier that day.
"Oh man," Greg grinned, shaking his head, "that song styles game's gonna go down in the whose line hall of fame....along with the improbable mission cat."
Ryan, who was just taking a swig, snorted and ended up inhaling most his beer, coughing and spluttering as Colin slapped him on the back and chuckled.
"Don't get me started on that one," Ryan gasped once he'd regained the ability to speak, grinning at Colin.
"We've certainly had a lot of laughs," Drew smiled at Ryan. "I, for one, am very glad you persuaded me to bring the show over here."
"Me too," Colin said seriously. "I would have been out of a job otherwise."
Ryan nudged his shoulder gently, "You would have got snapped up by someone immediately Col," he said firmly. Colin smiled at him but didn't look entirely convinced.
A commotion at the door made the four of them turn round to see a woman arguing with security. As her face came into view, Ryan's eyes widened.
"Pat?" he said in astonishment. He gave his drink to Colin and walked towards her.
Drew, Greg, and Colin saw the security guard let her through and she stormed towards Ryan looking furious and unleashing a torrent of abuse, although they were too far away to hear what she was saying.
"I wonder what that's about," Drew said as he watched the pair curiously.
"Whatever it is, it doesn't look good," Greg remarked, downing his drink.
They both glanced at Colin who was staring at the scene intently with a frown on his face. "Maybe you should go over there?" Drew suggested and Colin looked at him sharply. "Why me?" he asked.
Drew shrugged, "You've known her the longest out of all of us."
"Yeah," Greg smirked at Drew, "that and the fact that Ryan won't shout at Colin for getting involved."
"Fine," Colin sighed, putting the drinks down, "I'll see if I can diffuse the situation."
Drew and Greg watched as Colin walked across the room and spoke to Pat who stopped her rant mid-sentence. She looked at him for a moment before raising her hand and slapping him hard across the face, the sound echoing around the room and drawing everyone's attention. Ryan grabbed hold of her and pulled her away as Colin looked shocked, lifting a hand to his cheek. In the sudden absence of conversation, everyone heard her next words clearly.
"Don't you dare speak to me, you son of a bitch," she shouted, struggling against Ryan who was still trying to pull her away.
"Fuck," Greg muttered as Brad and Wayne walked over to them looking confused.
"What the hell's all that about?" Brad asked, looking over at Ryan who had put himself between Pat and Colin and was talking to her quietly.
"I'm guessing she's found out," Greg replied with a sigh.
"Found out what?" Drew asked with a puzzled expression.
"About Ryan and Colin," Greg said matter of factly.
"What about them?" Wayne asked and Greg mentally rolled his eyes at their inability to see the blatantly obvious.
Their conversation was interrupted by Pat's raised voice. "No, I won't keep my voice down. What's the matter Ryan? Scared everyone will find out you've been screwing around behind my back?"
Everyone apart from Greg stared in shock. "Wait a minute," Brad said, holding up his hand and trying to get his head around this piece of information, "Ryan and Colin are sleeping together?"
"Ding ding, Brad gets the gold star," Greg replied sarcastically.
"Woah," Drew said quietly, "I knew they were close but...." he trailed off.
"Oh come on Drew," Greg said irritably, "don't tell me you never thought of the possibility. A blind man could see how those two feel about each other."
"How did you know?" Brad asked curiously.
"I had my suspicions so one night, when I was having a quiet drink with Ryan, I asked him straight out."
"That was brave of you," Wayne remarked. Ryan's temper was legendary amongst the cast and crew, although no-one had ever heard him raise his voice to Colin.
Greg shrugged. "I think I caught him off guard and he admitted it," he replied, looking across at Ryan and sighing. "I guess the cat's well and truly out of the bag now."
Their attention was once again drawn to Pat who was being forcably taken out of the room by Ryan. As he got her to the door she smiled vindictively and shouted, "I think you should call your wife Colin, she sounded upset when I told her."
Everyone in the room watched as Ryan pushed her roughly out of the room and Colin stared after them looking horrified.
Greg put his drink down and walked over to Colin, saying loudly, "Ok people, show's over. Go back to your booze."
There were mutters and whispers as people around the room started talking again. Colin took out his cell-phone and saw that there were nine missed calls from Deb.
"How are you doing?" Greg asked softly.
"How do you think I'm doing?" Colin snapped, instantly regretting his harsh tone. "I'm sorry Greg," he sighed, "I didn't mean to take it out on you."
"No problem man, it was a stupid fucking question," Greg replied. He paused before asking, "What are you gonna do?"
Colin held up his phone and said, "I suppose I'd better get this over and done with."
He walked out of the room as Drew, Brad, Wayne, Chip, and Jeff joined Greg. Chip and Jeff had asked Drew what was going on and had been filled in on the situation as Greg had talked to Colin.
"Where's he going?" Brad asked as he reached Greg.
"To call Deb," Greg replied quietly. "The shit has well and truly hit the fan now."
Wayne frowned and shook his head. "I don't get it," he said, "I mean....they're both married. Why would they jeopardize that for a fling?"
Greg glared at him and Wayne recoiled slightly at his expression. "It's a hell of a lot more than that Wayne," he replied sternly. "You've seen how Ryan and Colin are when they're together. They share something that goes beyond everything else, even their wives. To deny it would mean denying who they truly are, so don't you dare stand there and judge them," he looked around at the rest of them, "any of you."
"Hey, I'm not judging," Drew said holding his hands up, "I was just surprised that's all. They're both my friends and I'll support them whatever."
"Me too," Brad said, and the others nodded in agreement. Wayne had the decency to look ashamed of himself.
When Colin still hadn't returned fifteen minutes later Greg decided to go and look for him, thinking he could probably use a friend. After looking everywhere in the hotel without success, he decided to go out for a cigarette before continuing his search. He stepped outside into the cool night air and saw that Jeff was already there, leaning against the wall and blowing out smoke slowly. Jeff looked around as he approached and smiled. "You need a nicotine fix too?"
"Yeah," Greg replied, pulling out his pack of cigarettes. "I've been trying to find Colin but..."
"No luck huh?" Jeff said, pulling out his lighter and offering it to him.
Greg lit up, inhaling deeply, and sighed. "No."
They both stood silently for a few minutes, watching the traffic and various people go by. Across the road there was a large park covered with trees, now bathed in darkness. As Greg let his eyes wander, he noticed someone sitting on a bench a little way in. He squinted at the figure, trying to get a better look. Jeff noticed his expression and followed his gaze.
"What is it Greg?" he asked curiously.
"I think I've just found Colin," Greg replied, dropping his cigarette and putting it out with his shoe before walking towards the road. "If you see Drew can you let him know where we are?" Greg called back as he made his way towards the park and Jeff nodded.
As Greg got nearer he could see that it definitely was Colin sitting on the bench. He had a bottle of beer in his hand and was gazing up at the sky.
"Do you need some company?" Greg asked and Colin jumped before turning to look at him. "Feel free to tell me to fuck off if you don't."
Colin chuckled and patted the seat next to him, taking another swig of beer.
"Where's Ryan?" Greg asked as he sat down.
Colin shrugged, turning back and looking into the darkness. "I'm guessing he's still with Pat."
They sat in silence for a few minutes, listening to the trees whisper to each other in the night breeze.
"What did Deb say?" Greg asked finally.
"Not much actually," Colin sighed, "just that she wants a quick divorce, she doesn't want to drag out the inevitable. You know, it's almost like she'd been expecting it."
Greg laid a hand on his shoulder and said softly, "I'm sorry man."
Colin shrugged, "It's my own fault isn't it?"
Greg didn't have an answer for that so they both sat and stared up at the stars, each lost in their own thoughts.
"What do you do when you love two people at once?" Colin asked quietly after a few minutes, not taking his eyes off the night sky.
Greg studied him thoughtfully, then said, "You may love both but which one can't you live without?"
Colin turned his head to look at him and Greg nodded, "I think you have your answer."
They both heard footsteps and looked around to see Drew, Brad, Jeff, Wayne, and Chip approaching.
"We just wanted to check you're alright Colin," Drew said as they gathered around. "We can go if you want."
"No, it's fine," Colin said, a brief smile gracing his face.
"So...how are you doing?" Brad asked softly.
"Well, let's see, I've managed to lose my wife and probably Ryan as well within the space of," he looked at his watch, "27 minutes.....I've been better Brad."
"You haven't lost him," Greg said reassuringly, putting an arm around him.
"You don't know that Greg," Colin replied, shaking his head. "We never promised each other anything and he's got three children to consider." He stopped abruptly and stared at Greg, "Oh God what am I going to tell Luke?"
"The truth?" Greg suggested.
"Yeah, that would go down well," Colin replied sarcastically. "Hey Luke, your mum and I are divorcing because I'm in love with your godfather. I'm sure he'd love that."
Silence followed his proclamation until Drew whispered, eyes wide, "You're in love with him?"
Colin looked at him and nodded. "Yes, I am. I wouldn't have cheated on my wife for anything less," he sighed, "not that it matters now." He leant forward, resting his arms on his knees, and dropped his head in an uncharacteristic display of hopeless resignation.
Everyone glanced at each other worriedly. Looking over Colin's back, Greg saw Ryan come out of the hotel with Pat and put her in a cab, watching her go with an unreadable expression. Greg raised his hand and Ryan looked across at him, his eyes moving over the rest of the huddled group of people before resting on Colin.
He crossed the road in three strides and walked up to them. Everyone but Colin was staring at him and Ryan looked back at them defiantly, silently daring them to say anything. He looked back down at Colin who was still hunched over, shoulders slumped defeatedly.
"Col?" he said gently, resting a hand on his back.
Colin looked up at him wretchedly. "Hey," he whispered.
Ryan looked at the others. "Can you give us a minute guys?"
There was a chorus of, "Sure," and "Of course," as the others moved away.
Greg squeezed Colin's shoulder as he got up and said, "We'll just be over here ok?" before joining the others.
Ryan took Greg's place next to Colin and reached over to take his hand. "Did you speak to Deb?"
"Yeah," Colin replied, looking down. "She's leaving me."
"I'm sorry Col," Ryan sighed and Colin looked up at him, unsure whether he genuinely meant it or not.
"What happened with Pat?" Colin asked, even though he was afraid to hear the answer.
Ryan shook his head, looking out into the park. "Turns out she's suspected an affair for a while and hired a private investigator to bring her proof, which he did of course. She shouted a lot, then told me that she's willing to try to save our marriage but that in the end it all comes down to a simple choice." He turned his head and met Colin's gaze, "You or her."
Colin swallowed and looked down at their joined hands, unable to look into Ryan's eyes as he broke his heart. He took a deep breath and tried to brace himself for the inevitable. "Okay."
Ryan hooked a finger under his chin and lifted it firmly so they were looking into each other's eyes.
"I chose you Col," he whispered.
Colin's eyes widened in shock and filled with tears. "You did?"
Ryan smiled at him and nodded. "I told her that I love you and I'm not gonna give you up." He moved his hand up to stroke Colin's cheek and said, "It's always been you." Then, not caring that the rest of the guys were watching them from a little way off, Ryan leant forward and kissed him.
Colin's heart was overflowing with happiness as he wrapped his arms around him and kissed him back, realizing that Ryan was finally his. He pulled back and whispered tearfully, "I love you too," before claiming Ryan's lips once more.
