The darkness of that night is difficult to forget. The ferocious winds creating swirling torrents on the usually tranquil pond. I was out walking in Hampstead Heath. That’s where we lived, all of the Americans from “Whose Line”.
I was out walking, just thinking. The cold sheets of water tore into my clothes, soaking my skin, chilling me to the bone. I skirted the edge of the pond, thinking about the mess my life had become. Outwardly I smiled for the cameras; inwardly I longed to end it. Life.
I still remember the inky black sky, and how well those blue lights flashed, illuminating the trees. I continued my path around the lake and reflected in it I saw them. Dozens of cops. My feet sped up: I couldn’t help it, I had an enquiring mind. I had to know what all the fuss was about.
From a safe distance I watched horror-struck as they dredged the body up. The limp figure of a man I knew well. Forever etched in my memory will be the blank staring eyes. All light, all life gone in an instant.
The rain continued to pummel my body, the wind continued to batter me senseless. The black of that night, the impending darkness, all were insignificant compared to the grief cutting deep within me.
I’ll never wipe that memory from my mind.
