NOTE: No wives! Fluffy! This makes no sense!
Greg volunteered to drive that night, so Drew was snuggled against Brad in the back seat, sound asleep. Colin and Ryan were as well. Jeff stayed awake to keep his lover company.
“How are you doing, Greg?”
“Good. Light up a cigarette for me, would you?”
Jeff obliged, taking a drag before passing it to Greg. “Thanks.” Greg took it, opening the window. “Jeez, it’s chilly out.”
“Yeah. Let’s hope the roads are stable now.” There was nothing but silence before Greg turned the radio on and turned down the volume. Jeff noticed that Brad was still awake. “You having trouble sleeping?”
“Not really. Just thinking.”
“About what?”
He looked to Drew. “About us.”
“Ooh, are you naked and covered in chocolate sauce?” Jeff grinned. Greg snorted.
“Yes, and also something else. But I can’t tell you here.”
“Why not?”
“He’s right there.”
“He’s asleep.”
“He could dream it.”
“Whatever.” Jeff turned back to his seat. “You want something to read?”
“What’ve you got?” Brad looked through his collection of comic books and crime novels and picked out an old Superman. Still trying not to disturb Drew, he unfurled it and began to read.
“YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!” Greg shouted at a guy who had just cut them off. Everyone was wide awake by now; it was three in the afternoon.
“Greg, why don’t I drive?” Colin asked. “You need a rest.”
Ryan stomach growled. “Perhaps some food as well.”
“We’ll stop. Colin, you can take over after we eat.”
The server told them they were in Jackson City, Missouri. “Two more states until we hit
“Hey!” Brad protested, snatching them back.
“Please?”
“No.”
“But you love me.”
“I said I love you, but it doesn’t mean I share my food!”
Colin chuckled. “It’s shameless the way they flirt.”
Ryan was beeping away on his game boy. “Crap. Crap. CRAP!” He kept shouting at the game. Drew looked at it over his shoulder. “You can’t beat Tetris?”
“I don’t play many games, Mr. Nerd Specks.”
“Hey!” Greg and Drew said in unison. “Don’t rag on speccy people.”
Drew took it. “Here, let me try.” He finished the level in a matter of minutes. “There you go.” Ryan mumbled something about Drew being a show-off.
Drew went back to a journal, chewing on his pen thoughtfully. “What are you writing, Drew?”
“Nothing.” He tried to hide the words with his hand but Brad caught it and tossed it to Jeff. “Read it!”
“Hey! Give that back!”
Jeff began to read. “Purgatory on earth, hell in my blood. Heaven out of reach, but hope has escaped Pandora’s box by now.” Jeff raised his eyebrows. “This is pretty good.”
Everyone turned to look at Drew who snatched up the journal. “It’s just some poetry. I was feeling a little down last week, I’m just finishing it up.”
Brad squeezed Drew’s shoulder. “I hear ya.” Drew smiled at him, grateful for his willingness to drop the subject. Drew turned to a new page. “Wanna play hangman?”
“Sure.”
“Me too.” Greg said. Drew started the game with the word, ‘Hoedown’, then Greg went for ‘Nerd Specks.’
The drive went smoothly and Colin, who had been silent most of the way, said, ‘We’re entering
“Great. Three days is good time.”
“Getting there is half the fun.” Jeff said.
“Thank you, Captain Cliché.”
