Drew sighed heavily as he leaned against the bar. He nodded a silent confirmation to the young barman and his beer glass was refilled for the third time that night.
Today had officially sucked and he intended to get as drunk as possible; hopefully waking in the morning with a monster hangover and no recollection of the day before.
He sighed again, ordering a whiskey chaser to accompany his beer.
"You look as pissed off as me."
The voice behind him startled Drew momentarily. He looked to his side as the owner of said voice joined him. "I'll have what he's having."
"Bad day?"
Colin chuckled humourlessly, "You could say that," he conceded, turning to his friend. "Here's to shitty days and drunken nights" he smiled.
"Amen to that" Drew nodded and they clinked their whiskey glasses together, both downing the contents in one gulp.
"Damn!" Colin choked. "What the Hell is that? Drain cleaner?"
"Two more of those" Drew chuckled.
They took their drinks and wandered over to the tables in the hotel bar, finding a corner which housed a comfortable looking sofa.
"So" Drew sighed, sinking his tired body into the plush cushions. "What's niggling you buddy?"
"Uh uh" Colin admonished, "You first. You're drinker than me."
"Drinker?"
Colin frowned at the shot glass, once more wondering what the Hell was in it. "Drunker" he blinked.
Drew laughed and took a sip of his beer. "Mine's just boring romantic shit. Or non-romantic as it turns out."
"Snap" Colin smiled distractedly, searching his pockets for his packet of cigarettes.
"You know you're not supposed to smoke in here" Drew muttered, once Colin had finally located the evasive pack.
"You're kidding me?"
"Nope!" Drew tutted, ponting at the 'no smoking' sign on a large pillar to their left.
"Fuck 'em" Colin groused, lighting up. "They have air-conditioning. So, go on."
"Go on what?"
Colin simply raised an eyebrow and waited patiently for Drew to catch up with the conversation.
"Oh! My...thing."
At Colin's approving nod, Drew took another sip of his drink, for courage.
"I finally bit the bullet with Jeff.”
"Wow" Colin breathed. "You actually did it?"
"Mhmm."
"I'm guessing it didn't go well."
"Nope. Went pretty much as far from 'well' as it’s possible to get without needing a passport."
"What happened?" Colin questioned, turning his body towards Drew and resting his elbow on the back of the sofa.
Drew sighed and took his glasses off, rubbing his tired, drunken eyes. "Okay...."
*********************
"Hey."
Drew looked up from his table, into the nervous but smiling gaze of Jeff. "Hey! Glad you could make it!" he smiled, standing and pulling out a chair.
"You're not gonna fire me are you?" the younger man asked, eyeing the chair suspiciously.
"No. Why would I do that?" Drew frowned.
Jeff let out an audible sigh of relief and took the offered seat. "I don't know. I tend to panic when my boss suddenly asks to see me halfway through a tour."
"I'm not your boss. I'm just Drew" the other man admonished. "Let me get you a drink."
"'Kay” Jeff smiled. He watched the man amble over to the bar, wondering a little at how much more comfortable in his own skin Drew looked, when he was dressed casually.
Drew returned after a few minutes, passing Jeff his glass of beer, slightly shaky hands wiping some of the nervously spilled residue onto his T-shirt.
"So..." Jeff began, once the other man was seated. "What's up?"
"I um...I..." Drew stuttered, studiously not meeting the gaze of the handsome young man opposite and mentally trying to beat enough courage into himself, to say what he needed to say.
"I have to tell you something and I'm just gonna come right out and say it."
"Okay" Jeff replied softly.
"See, 'cause this has been building and building and I've been trying to work up the....to find the words that I need to....to...and Colin said I should just say it 'cause I won't know if I don't and it's driving me crazy and..."
"Drew" Jeff interrupted, laying his hand on his babbling friend's arm.
He looked up into those dark, hazel eyes he adored so much. "Right" he nodded.
Jeff settled back and picked up his drink, giving Drew a few moments to gather hit wits together.
"Thing is...I'm in love with you."
The beer that had been happily travelling down Jeff's throat screeched to halt and switched to reverse gear.
"Oh Jesus!" Drew panicked, as Jeff doubled over, choking and gasping. A mixture of drink and spittle was flying out of the young man's mouth, finding purchase on his, thankfully black, shirt.
Drew got up quickly and began pounding on Jeff's back as the coughing grew louder, accompanied by desperate gasps of air.
After a minute or two, the coughing subsided and Jeff looked up at his companion, wiping his tear-ridden eyes as he did so.
"Um...you took that well I thought" Drew tried, laughing nervously.
"I...oh God!" Jeff exclaimed, knocking his chair over as he stood, his wide-eyes boring into Drew. "Oh God! I...you...I...I'm sorry" he said finally, bolting out of the bar.
************************
"Ooh, ouch" Colin winced sympathetically.
"I totally blame you."
"Oh thanks."
"You're welcome. Another drink?"
"Please" Colin nodded.
He felt a little guilty as he watched Drew walk dejectedly to the bar. His friend had been bending his ear almost constantly about Jeff for the past year. Sadly, Drew had the same problem as Colin when it came to matters of the heart, absolute lack of self-confidence.
'I shouldn't have pushed him and I shouldn't have pushed myself' Colin mentally berated. 'I proved us both right.'
"Here ya go" Drew smiled, placing the drinks on the table and settling down with a sigh.
"I'm sorry" Colin said softly, patting his friend on the shoulder.
"Nah. Not your fault bud. At least I know now eh?"
"Small comfort."
"That's why God created alcohol" Drew winked.
They fell into a companionable silence for a while, Drew biting the inside of his cheek to hide a smile when Colin lit another cigarette.
"Come on then Captain Morose, I’ve told you my tale of woe. What's yours?"
"Oh mine's a doozy" Colin laughed.
"Ooh really?" Drew replied enthusiastically, turning his body to face Colin. "I'm all ears."
Colin took a moment to visualise the statement, before shaking it off and announcing evenly, "I slept with Ryan and Greg."
He'd never thought of silence as a tangible object before, but, looking into his friend's blinking, open-mouthed face, Colin felt as if he was being crushed by an oppressive weight. The calm before the storm maybe. 'Hurricane Carey' he mused, finding a small amount of comfort in the humour.
"Damn!" Drew eventually breathed. "When did this happen?"
"Last night" Colin sighed. "I thought...I thought that was it. That it was finally happening."
"What exactly did happen?"
"It's Brad's damn fault" Colin huffed. "It was shortly after you went to bed and there was just us four left in the bar. Brad suddenly comes out with 'hey, you two ever thought of having a threesome?'"
Drew burst out laughing at this.
"That was their reaction" Colin smiled, infected immediately by Drew's laughter.
"What did they say?"
"Ryan kinda drunkenly glared at him and told him it wouldn't be with him if they did."
"He gets a little protective of Greg doesn't he?"
"Well, they've been together what? A year?"
Drew nodded behind his beer glass. "Brad's been hitting on Greg for a lot longer."
"Poor Brad" Colin lamented.
"Yeah."
The ensuing silence lasted a few seconds before Drew impatiently cleared his throat, prompting Colin to continue.
"Oh yeah....well, me being slightly more than three sheets to the wind I asked 'what about me?' before my brain could even register what the fuck my mouth was doing."
"Oh Christ" Drew chuckled.
"Brad laughed at me and went to the bathroom. But the guys just looked at me, kinda shocked. Then Ryan goes, 'do you wanna?'...Before I know it, we're all hands and tongues tripping out of the elevator and crashing into their room."
"Details?" Drew asked eagerly.
"Not if my life depended upon it."
"Damn! So how did it all go wrong? I would have thought you'd be skipping about like Shirley Temple on caffeine."
"I read more into it than there actually was" Colin sighed. "I mean it was fine this morning. I left them both sleeping ’cause I had to get up early for my dental appointment..."
"Did he sort your filling out?"
"Yeah, they had to drill out the old one. Really hurt too. Bastard."
"How much sympathy do you need before I get the rest of the story?"
"I hate you."
"I know."
"Good. So, I didn't see them much today, obviously. Then, about an hour ago, I go up to their room, see if maybe they want to get together, go out somewhere seeing as we have the night off."
"God bless nights off" Drew said, raising his glass, spilling some its contents in the process. "Oops" he amended, wiping his T-shirt.
"Your shirt looks like a distillery" Colin noted.
"Well yours looks like Picasso threw up" Drew countered, glancing at Colin's garishly-coloured shirt.
"It stops people looking at my face" he shrugged.
Drew raised an eyebrow and lightly cuffed his friend round the head. "None of that now. Get on with the story."
"Where was I?"
"Nights off."
"Oh right. Well, I met them in the hall as I was getting out of the lift; they were on their way out."
"Ah."
"Yeah. Things got a little awkward. There's me all 'hey guys!' and smiling like a teenager at a Backstreet Boys concert and they couldn't even look me in the eyes. I've never felt so fucking stupid in my entire life Drew."
"Man I'm sorry."
"My own fault" Colin smiled sadly, patting the hand that Drew had laid on his shoulder. "I should have kept my mouth shut. I've been trying to console myself by thinking 'hey, at least you got to be with them for a night'. But that just makes the longing worse you know? Now I know what I'm missing."
"Man!" Drew chuckled, "sucks to be us."
"Yeah" Colin sighed, absently lighting yet another cigarette.
"Rebel" Drew muttered. "I dunno, I just think...It'd be nice to get a happy ending. Just once, ya know?"
"Yeah...like in the movies when..." Colin began, before his attention was drawn to a newcomer advancing on Drew. "Hello...looks like one of us might be re-renewing his subscription to the Disney channel after all."
"Hmm?" Drew blinked, looking up in surprise as a nervous looking Jeff perched on the table in front of them.
"Hey guys" he smiled.
"Wh...Hi..."Drew stuttered.
"You know you're not supposed to smoke in here" Jeff admonished, stealing Colin's cigarette and taking a long, relieving drag.
"Apparently not" Colin replied dryly.
"Drew, can we talk? Please?"
"Um...sure."
"I'll make myself scarce" Colin grinned, stealing his smoke back from Jeff and rising unsteadily to his feet.
"Sir, this is a no smoking area."
Colin's slightly unfocused gaze rested on the bar-manager who had come over to berate him. "I'm not smoking it, I'm just holding it," he grumbled and wandered off towards the elevators in the foyer.
"So..." Drew began.
"I'm so sorry!" Jeff cut in. "I didn't mean to run earlier I just...you told me you loved me and I've been wanting to hear it for so long and....finally, I get what I want and I go and spit beer and snot all over myself. I was mortified! God Drew, talk about embarrassment 101."
"You...hold on. You're okay with this?"
"I'm very okay with it!" Jeff laughed. "I love you too. Really...I've loved you for a long time."
"Whoa!" Drew breathed, sitting back against the cushions. "I..." he began, before noticing the presence of the bar-manager. “What? Is it a no-talking area too?"
"Oh! I'm sorry sir" he muttered, his face colouring at being caught eaves-dropping.
Once the man had left, Drew turned back to his companion. "Idiot! He's probably..."
That was as far as he got, Jeff deciding it would be the ideal opportunity to swoop in for a kiss.
Drew moaned approvingly, snaking his arms around Jeff's waist, pulling the other man onto his lap and deepening the kiss.
"Wait" Jeff panted, pulling away. "We...room."
"Good idea" Drew nodded, accepting Jeff's help to hoist him off of the sofa.
Once they were in the elevator, the younger man pounced on him again, pinning him to the wall and kissing him fiercely.
"Oh God!" Drew moaned, moving his hands down to cup Jeff's denim-clad butt. "Keep that up and I won't make it to our room."
"Awww."
"What?"
"You said 'our' room" Jeff sighed, resting his chin on Drew's shoulder and nibbling at the tempting ear in front of him.
"So I did" Drew moaned, tilting his head to give Jeff easier access.
The elevator pinged to a halt and Drew lifted his new lover up, Jeff curling his legs around the other man's body as he was carried out into the hallway.
"I hope you're not tired" Drew smiled, leaning Jeff against the door and fishing for his room key.
"Do I seem tired?" Jeff replied, grabbing Drew's ass and grinding his hardness against the older man's hips.
"Hoo boy!” Drew gulped, backing Jeff through the, now open, door, stopping briefly to hang a 'do not disturb' sign on the handle, before slamming it shut behind him.
‘My happy ending’ he sighed mentally, before Jeff’s tongue began systematically wiping out any remotely coherent thought from his mind.
------------------------------
Colin slowly came to the next morning, squinting at the bright sunlight pouring through his window, accompanying the Buddy Rich solo playing out in his head.
"Ouch" he moaned softly.
"Morning."
It took Colin a few moments to register the sleepy greeting, and the large hand that was snaking up his thigh. A thigh which appeared to be curled around a long, warm pair of legs.
"Wha...?" Colin muttered, opening his eyes a fraction more and finding himself almost nose to nose with a smiling Ryan.
"Meh" Greg mumbled from behind him. Colin felt a smooth pair of lips plant a brief kiss on his shoulder as Greg shuffled a little closer, laying his hand on Colin's stomach.
"Is this Groundhog day?" he frowned, glancing over his shoulder.
Ryan chuckled, his hand stopping to rest at the curve of Colin's ass, fingers playing idly with the edge of the confused man's boxers. "We came in to talk to you last night, but you were out for the count."
"You looked so warm and toasty all curled up under the blankets" Greg mumbled into his back, "we couldn't resist."
"How did you get in?"
"Your door was open" Ryan retorted, his tone of voice promising verbal punishment for Colin's carelessness at a later time.
"Oh...um..."
"I'm sorry about last night..."
"We" Greg muttered.
"We're sorry about last night" Ryan amended, glaring at his lover. "It's just; we needed to talk about some things. Well, one thing. Well, you. Damn it...Greg!" Ryan groused.
"Oh for crying out loud" Greg groaned, propping his head on his elbow and staring myopically down at Colin, who was beginning to think he'd entered the twilight zone at some point during the night. 'Maybe when I got up to pee.'
"Last night was....well…"
"Yummy" Ryan grinned, brushing his nose against Colin's cheek.
"Yeah" Greg smiled. "So, we were wondering if you'd like to try something more permanent than just a one-night stand."
"Um...how permanent?" Colin asked, now pretty much convinced he'd been sucked into another dimension.
"Completely permanent. As in, together, like the three musketeers or...something else that comes in threes" Greg replied, wishing to God his brain would join the rest of his body and wake up.
"Are you serious?!" Colin squeaked.
"Deadly serious" Ryan responded, snuggling closer and reaching round to squeeze Greg's butt.
"Don't do that, I need to pee" his lover grumbled.
"How romantic. So...are you interested?"
"Depends."
"On?"
"Whether or not I’m still asleep......OW!"
Greg rubbed lightly at the red marked he'd just pinched into Colin's belly. "Apparently you're awake."
"Apparently so" Colin agreed reluctantly, reaching around to smack the other man on the hip.
"Col?"
"Hmm?"
"Is it a yes?"
Colin gazed dumbly into Ryan's hopeful green eyes for a second, before collecting his wits to answer. "Well, considering I spent most of last night getting drunk and miserable because I thought you didn't want me...I'd say yes. It's a yes."
"We've spent the best part of a month trying to work out the best way to get you naked, you silly ass!" Greg admonished, nuzzling Colin's neck.
"And all you had to do was ask" the older man chuckled.
Ryan made a show of slapping his palm to his forehead. "Duh!" he grinned and moved to cover Colin's laughing lips with his own, slipping his tongue instantly into the conveniently open mouth.
"Guys, stop it! I really do need to pee and you're not helping!"
Colin tore his mouth away from Ryan and craned his neck back. "So be quick" he sighed, curving his arm around the back of Greg's head and pulling him down for a sloppy kiss.
Ryan moaned loudly at the sight and bent to run his tongue over Colin's nipple, sliding his large hand into the front of the other man shorts as he did so.
"Mmm" Colin sighed, gasping at the sensation of Greg's morning erection rubbing against his ass as he undulated his hips.
"Oh Jesus fuck! Give me two seconds" Greg muttered, virtually leaping out of bed.
Colin whimpered at the delicious sight of Greg's naked body disappearing into the bathroom while Ryan continued his maddening caresses.
"My happy ending" he sighed.
