Chap 4
“So, remind me, why are we doing our homework now?” asked Colin who was sitting on Ryan’s bedroom floor cross legged.
“Because,” Ryan sighed, “We want to get it out of the way. Tonight we’re going to Drew’s and knowing us we’ll leave it until the last minute and then we’ll never get it done on time.”
“I’m bored.” Ryan rolled his eyes.
“I,” Ryan started, “oh…” Colin had snuck up behind him and started to nibble on his ear. “C-Colin,” he stammered. “I really want to get this homework done.” Colin began to place kisses on the back of Ryan’s neck. “Colin, not now.”
“You know you want it,” he mumbled into Ryan’s neck and he began to suck the tender skin sending waves of pleasure down Ryan’s spine. Ryan shrugged him off, ignoring his temptation. Colin put his arms around Ryan. “What’s wrong? You wouldn’t normally care about your homework. Something’s up.”
Ryan shrugged Colin off again, and tried to quietly continue with his work. Colin kissed him on the cheek. “Tell me,” Colin nagged. Ryan stayed silent and continued to do his homework ignoring Colin completely.
“Ryan…please,” Colin said with big puppy dog eyes.
“Look, Col, I’ve just had a lot on my mind recently.”
“Like…”
“It doesn’t matter.”
Colin sighed. “Fine, don’t tell your boyfriend, see if I care.” He picked up his book and reluctantly carried on with the horrors of math homework. Every other minute he sighed, trying to make his stubborn boyfriend feel guilty.
“Stop sulking,” Ryan mumbled keeping his eyes glued to his work.
“I’m not sulking! I’m just upset that you won’t tell your boyfriend what’s wrong.”
“I had a talk with my parents and it got me thinking. There I told you. Now please, drop the subject.”
Colin didn’t continue to nag Ryan. Nagging Ryan never ended well; he knew that from personal experience. Colin was hurt, although, he would never tell that to Ryan. He was hurt that his boyfriend, whom he thought he was in love with, wouldn’t talk to him. He was hurt that Ryan didn’t trust him enough to talk to him.
“Ryan I gotta go,” he said getting up and stuffing his books into his bag. “I’ll see you at Drew’s later.”
“Whatever,” mumbled Ryan with his eyes still glued to his book. Colin picked up his bag and opened the door. He waited for a goodbye, but he quickly realised he was wasting his time. He shook his head, wondering why he even bothered.
When Ryan heard the door shut he looked up at the door. “Bye,” he whispered before going back to his work.
“Brad, where are you going?”
“Out with Charlotte,” he lied, as he slipped on his shoes.
“Do you want me to drive you?” his Dad asked looking up through his reading glasses, from his newspaper.
“No, thanks,” he said as he checked his hair in the mirror. He played with the front to make sure it was spiked up perfectly before saying, “I can walk.”
“When are we going to meet your girlfriend?” his mom asked, emerging from the kitchen wearing a pink flowered apron.
“I don’t know,” he said opening the door. “Bye.” He closed it behind him and started down the road. He took his cell phone out and called Drew’s house.
“Hey, Drew. I should be there in 20 minutes. Is Chip there yet? Good. Yeah, I told them I was out with Charlotte. See you soon.” He wished he didn’t have to lie to his parents, but he had no choice.
“Colin? Where’s Ryan?” asked Drew as he opened the door.
“Hello to you too,” Colin said cheerfully. “I don’t know where Ryan is.”
“I thought he was coming with you.”
“Nope.” Colin took off his coat and wondered into the living room to see Chip, Jeff, Greg and Wayne already sitting there, chatting cheerfully.
“So, you’re staying with Jeff for a while?” asked Wayne taking a gulp of coke from a can.
“Yup.”
“Watch out for Brad,” Wayne informed Jeff. “He might get jealous.” Colin took a seat on the sofa next to Jeff. Jeff said “hi” only just managing to tear his eyes away from Greg, who was oblivious to the fact that he was being stared at. Brad arrived shortly after, greeting everyone with a hug, and greeting Chip with a long passionate kiss. “Get a room,” Wayne joked playfully. The only person yet to arrive was Ryan. It was well over an hour since he was supposed to be there. They all knew how much Ryan loved to be fashionably late but this was just ridiculous.
“Colin, you sure you don’t know where Ryan is?” asked Drew again checking his watch. “If he doesn’t come soon we might have to start the movie without him.” Colin merely shrugged. They waiting for another 10 minutes and then impatiently decided to start the movie. Drew put the ‘Donnie Darko’ DVD in the DVD player, and they all got comfortable around one other. Brad and Chip cuddled together on one sofa while Greg moved to sit next to Jeff. “Hope you don’t mind if I lean on you,” Greg asked. Jeff shrugged as if to say he didn’t mind. Greg rested his head on Jeff’s shoulder, noticing how it felt comfortable to be so close to Jeff.
“I can see what’s happening,” Brad whispered to Chip and he looked at Greg leaning comfortably on Jeff.
“What?” asked Chip.
“And they don’t have a clue,” he started to sing-song.
“Who?” asked Chip on cue.
“They’ll fall in love, and here’s the bottom line our trio’s down to two.” Chip laughed out loud, earning his worried looks from his friends.
“No offence guys, but now is not the best time to be singing songs from ‘the Lion King’” commented Drew teasingly as he paused the DVD.
“Sorry,” said Brad cheekily as the doorbell rang. Drew got up to answer it.
“It’s probably Ryan,” Wayne mentioned stealing a couple of chips from the bowl placed on the floor. Drew swung the door open expecting to see the cheerful friendly giant he knew as one of his best friends. Instead he saw a gloomy, miserable teenager who didn’t look like he was in the mood for entertainment.
“Sorry I’m late,” he mumbled walking past Drew and into the house, taking his coat off. He walked into the living room, avoiding any eye contact with anyone, especially Colin. He sat on the floor with his back against the sofa on which Jeff and Greg were sitting. He stretched his long legs out while waiting patiently for Drew to continue with the DVD. “Hello to you too,” said Greg leaning over in front of him to he could get a better view of Ryan. “How nice of you to turn up.”
“Sorry,” Ryan apologised for the second time. “I had stuff to do.”
“You could have called,” Drew said even though he really wasn’t that bothered. He was more interested in finishing the movie.
“Sorry,” Ryan said again, gloomily. “I had to finish my homework.” Wayne coughed hysterically in response to what Ryan had just said.
“I’m sorry,” he managed to say between coughs. “Did you just say you had to finish your homework?”
“He did,” said Colin grumpily. “Homework matters more to him than his boyfriend now. Isn’t that right, Ryan?” Colin asked folding his arms, acting smug.
“Shut up,” murmured Ryan under his breath.
“So it’s true?” Colin urged on.
“I said shut up,” Ryan repeated, getting angry.
“You’re not answering my ques-“ before Colin could finish Ryan had attempted to lunge across the room in an endeavour to grab Colin. Fortunately for Colin, Wayne had good reflexes and grabbed Ryan before he even had a chance to touch Colin.
“Ryan, calm down man!” Wayne shouted struggling to keep him in a lock.
“What’s up with you two?” asked Jeff. Neither of them answered. They just continued to give each other glares of doom.
Ryan slowly calmed down and Wayne slowly let go of him. “Are you calm now?” asked Drew, standing back, not wanting to get too involved.
“Yeah,” Ryan mumbled as he got up. He stormed out of the room, grabbed his coat and was out of the house quicker than you could make toast with a piece of bread and a flame thrower.
“Ryan!” Colin shouted down the street running after him. Ryan ignored and continued to walk speedily.
He has to have such long legs, Colin thought to himself as he ran to catch up. “Ryan,” he said softly and he grabbed onto Ryan’s arm. Ryan yanked his arm away and continued walking. “Ryan, I want to talk to you.” Ryan continued to walk but Colin continued to follow after persistently.
“Why?”
“I want to apologise,” Colin confessed glumly. Ryan stopped, and sighed.
“Col, you have nothing to apologise for.”
“What?” he asked looking up at Ryan with a confused expression on his face. Ryan took him by the hand and started to walk. He looked up at the stars in the night sky, contemplating on what to say next. Colin moved closer to his boyfriend, craving his touch. “I’m the one who should be apologising,” he started as he crossed them over the road in the direction of a small park which was on the corner of the next block.
“Why?”
“Because,” said Ryan leading Colin into the small playground for kids. “You did nothing wrong.” Ryan let go of Colin’s hand and went to sit on a swing, followed by Colin who took the one next to Ryan. “I was just…mad at myself,” he said hanging his head.
“Ry?”
“You remember I told you I had a talk with my parents?” Colin nodded holding onto the swings so that he wouldn’t fall off. His feet were too short to touch the ground. “It really got to me. I was scared. Still am.”
“What did they say?” asked Colin.
“That I would never get anywhere with my life because I never do any work. They said that I would be a failure.”
“That’s not true.”
“It is,” he whispered. “In the end it’s all up to me. I’m scared, Col. I don’t want things to change. I want to stay this way forever. The same age, same friends, same school and most importantly the same boyfriend.” Colin got off his swing and walked over to Ryan. Ryan scooted back and helped Colin onto his lap. “I do trust you, Col, and I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was eating me. It was…difficult.”
“It’s alright,” said Colin holding onto him tight as Ryan rocked them back and forth on the swing. “I’m sorry for the way I acted back at Drew’s.”
“Let’s just forget about it,” Ryan whispered into Colin's ear, sending cold chills down Colin’s spine.
“Deal,” he said jumping off of Ryan’s lap and running towards the seesaw. “Catch me if you can!” Ryan grinned, bolted up and chased Colin around the playground, kicking up the sand behind him as he ran in the moonlight.
Ryan made a grab for Colin, tripping over as he did so. He fell to the ground pulling Colin on top of him. The two laughed together until the mood suddenly changed. Ryan looked into Colin’s eyes and felt the urge to kiss him harder than he ever had before. He sat and up grabbed Colin’s wrists, forcing Colin onto his back. Ryan held his wrists above his head and planted firmly on the sandy ground so Colin couldn’t escape him, even if he had wanted to.
Ryan brought his face forwards to kiss Colin’s soft tender lips. Colin, did nothing to resist, but only kissed him back harder. The taller man instantly responded, making his kisses stronger, his tongue begging for entrance. Not too long after he was given permission to enter, his tongue tasting its way around Colin’s mouth, claiming its territory.
They kissed passionately for what seemed like a life time. However, when they finally stopped, neither of them wanted to move. They just lay there, together, looking up at the stars. Neither of them had to speak, they didn’t have to. They already knew exactly what the other was thinking and what the other felt.
Finally, after a long period of silence, Colin said, “We should get going. We have school tomorrow.”
“I don’t care,” said Ryan pulling Colin towards him by the hips.
“What about doing work? And making sure you don’t screw up your life?”
“I’m not scared anymore,” Ryan murmured semi-coherently as he was still on a high from their passionate activities. “As long as you’re with me I don’t have to be scared. You chase away my nightmares. When you’re around nothing seems so bad anymore… Please never leave me.”
“I won’t,” Colin promised. “I promise, I will never leave you. Not now. Not ever.”
