A teeny tiny ficlet inspired by this audio snippet from Colin's radio program and something roseofpain84 said to me. It kind of wrote itself. :)




The call ends but Ryan’s grin remains firmly in place, along with that giddy swell of laughter and emotions that always comes into play whenever he talks to his oldest and closest friend. He chuckles again to himself as the conversation replays itself in his head on the short drive home from the studio. It’s always been so easy to talk to Colin, no matter how long they've been apart. He should call more often, it’s true.

As he sits reliving each moment, his memory sticks on one in particular when Colin had asked him if he remembered when they’d met. He’d said no, played it out for a laugh, but that wasn't true. Despite the years clouding other later memories, he remembers that moment in bright and vivid detail—the smell of the theater; the noise; the exact shade of Colin’s pants and rather garish shirt; the first time those hazel eyes had swung around to rest on him, accompanied by a polite but warm smile; the moment Colin’s hand slid into his and shook it.

Colin said that they meshed right away and it was true. Ryan had felt more at home on that stage with Colin than he ever had on any stage before. He could never forget that night.

A few minutes later Ryan’s home, smiling at Pat and kissing her cheek, drawn into another conversation, all the while trying not to analyze exactly why he hadn't told Colin the truth. That question will remain determinedly unanswered.
