TWO MONTHS LATER
It took some considerable time but after many, many talks with Ryan over the phone, getting assurances from him that he was in fact cured, Pat allowed her husband to return home at last. The first thing he did when he walked through his front door was embrace both his children and let out the pain that he’d suffered from being apart from his family. In the same vein, Colin wasted no time in returning to Canada after Ryan had left.
As for the news, the world now believed that, after some time held captive, Ryan Stiles was taken back in a scuffle that left him injured. Naturally, Ryan had been offered excessive amounts of money to “sell his story” to various different tabloids and chat shows. He rejected every one of them. It was important to him that only the few people would know what truly happened to him in the week he disappeared off the face of the Earth. Luckily, those people were the ones he trusted the most.
Drew had called Colin directly after the news had broke, wanting to hear everything about his tall co-star’s recovery. All through the lengthy conversation, Drew hung onto his every word and swore secrecy. Dan had said he was prepared to push the schedule back if needed, however Ryan was entirely adamant that he would return to work as soon as possible as if the incident had never happened, a decision that nobody argued, least of all those who knew him.
The biggest change came in the amount of time that Colin was spending thinking about him – not just reflecting on the virus but the man in general. Ryan had the best kind of presence, the one that drifted into mind and didn’t leave until four hours later. More than often, Colin found himself wanting… needing to call him. It was only after two weeks of these daydreams did he eventually give in to the need. On that one occasion, he’d spent the best part of a whole afternoon talking to him, listening to his voice and feeling that connection again.
Meanwhile, James Bryce had contacted both men in question and laid to rest the case for good – the virus could still strike at anytime but Ryan was now history with all the other victims who’d given their lives for the purpose. As for Hunter, it had been assured that the young man was now somewhere where he could cause no harm and where he would receive steady grief counselling to help with accepting the fate of his father.
In addition, Bryce had requested that, in the event of the virus claiming another victim, Ryan and Colin would be called out as key supporters; Ryan for the victim and Colin for the victim’s loved ones. By importing the advice they had learnt on their own difficult journey, they could do the world of good to those in desperate need of help.
The next taping of Whose Line was a fairly anticipated affair for crew and fans alike – it would be the first time that Ryan had returned to the public eye since he disappeared. Although, it was mainly anticipatory due to the fact that they were ready to return to normal and get back into the groove of being funny for a living. When Colin arrived at the studios a little later than the others, he entered the green room to find Ryan doubled over in laughter at something Brad had said. A few other members of the crew were there, too. Even Dan. They had all wanted to see the man for themselves and absorb his charming warmth as the light mood slipped back into the room. Colin watched silently from the door and then Ryan caught his gaze. The emeralds of his eyes were brighter than they’d ever been, touched deeper by the dimples of his face as he smiled in Colin’s direction.
Sighing happily to himself, Colin moved away and headed to make-up and wardrobe to give the girls something to work on.
Some time later after having been made ‘camera-worthy’, Colin went to his dressing room so he could drop off a few things. As he reached for his key, he noticed that the door was already slightly ajar. Immediately, his thoughts flew to the only other person whom he had given a spare key to.
He entered to the sight of Ryan sitting on the couch and flicking through a magazine, one of the customary ones they gave the cast for whatever reason. As soon as his attention was diverted to Colin, he stood up, dropping the mag to the coffee table in simple disregard.
Neither of them could help but smile as they each greeted with a synchronised, “Hi.” Colin shook his head and stepped forward to embrace the taller man, feeling encompassed and protected by him. Equally, with Colin in his arms, Ryan was reminded just how much he’d hated not having Colin around. Sure, He’d gone for months without seeing Colin before and it hadn’t bothered him as much, but that was… before.
“How was your flight?” he murmured against Colin’s ear and pulled back so that the man could answer.
“You know how flights are,” Colin shrugged. “Like that I suppose.” As he asked his next question, he disappeared into the little adjoined bedroom. “How’s Pat doing?”
Luckily, Colin wasn’t able to see Ryan frown slightly at the question, but Ryan perked up his voice anyway. “Yeah, she’s fine. We found out the sex of the baby last week.”
“Oh, and?” he prompted as he re-entered with a smile.
“It’s a girl. I’m gonna have two daughters.” Ryan chuckled at the thought, brushing a slightly sweaty hand through his hair casually. “Imagine the arguments…”
“That’s great, Ry,” Colin congratulated sincerely and patted his shoulder. “You’re both going to be so happy.”
An unexpected awkward pause descended onto the pair, amplifying every faint little noise imaginable. The hand on Ryan’s shoulder moved slowly up to his face, caressing the skin of his cheek – it was almost a subconscious act and Colin licked his lips at the look in Ryan’s deep eyes.
“Colin,” he whispered. It was an ambiguous statement as his head lowered ever so slightly towards Colin’s barely parted mouth.
“Ryan,” he replied and swallowed hard at the sudden urge that had captivated him. The moment mouths met, Ryan’s hands rose to Colin’s hips and held him in place whilst he dared to swipe his tongue over Colin’s lips. He hadn’t expected the Canadian to respond as well as he did with both hands now clasped around his neck.
Colin was vaguely impressed that he managed to push himself away after only a minute of mindless kissing. “Whoa… Ry, what are we doing?”
Ryan blinked, a little confused and dazed himself. “I don’t know, but it felt kinda nice.”
“I thought we’d put that behind us.” Colin remembered back to when they’d shared a shower together and was hit by a hot flush in response.
“I never said that,” the other man shrugged, not exactly understanding why himself. “I guess I just miss you too much.” Noticing that Colin still looked a little resistant, Ryan reached out and took his hand gently, a smile tugging at his mouth and the feel of warm skin on his. “We could work, Colin. As a couple, I mean.”
With a small sigh, he looked up at Ryan, seeing the acceptance already settled in his gaze. “You think so?”
“Hey, it’ll be like being friends. Only more interesting.” Ryan laughed – a sound that never failed to let Colin join in with the mirth. As soon as it had appeared, though, the happiness floated away.
His mind drifted in and out of reasons why he couldn’t commit to Ryan like that, but found himself disregarding every one of them. “Let’s… let’s talk about this later, shall we? We’ve kind of got a show to do.”
Ryan nodded. “Sure, okay,”
As if on cue, a knock sounded at the door and the cheery stagehand called out. “Ten minutes until you’re due on stage, Mister Mochrie!”
With gleaming eyes, which showed Colin just how thrilled he was to be back, Ryan turned fondly and grinned at his best friend. “Ready to knock ‘em dead, Col?”
Colin laid a hand to the small of Ryan’s back and led them both toward the door. “With you next to me, Ry, it’s going to be a massacre.” The frown on the taller man’s face made Colin smile nervously and he slung his arm more firmly around those broad shoulders. “Sorry, bad choice of words. What I meant to say was, ‘yes’.”
The soft click of the door accompanied the deep chuckling from the two men as they walked down the corridor together, ready and eager to put on another great show.
After all, the show must go on.

Date: 2015-01-16 02:05 am (UTC)I was really dubious about this fic at first, what with the werewolves and all, but I'm really glad I finally set aside my prejudices and gave it a go. It was really enjoyable to read, with just the right amount of horror involved. I generally dislike original characters, but yours were just perfect in the story without overpowering it. The interaction between Ryan and Colin in this is just beautiful.
