“Shit!” Colin yelled!
His kitchen was filled with black smoke. He panicked as the scene made him relive the sense of dread from earlier today. What was left of his lunch was now a black mess on the bottom of the saucepan, and now the pasta didn’t really resemble anything he would recognise. After all, not many people are stupid enough to burn pasta!
Still cursing, he grabbed an oven mitt and pulled the pans off the heat. He noted they were ruined as he turned the gas off.
He sighed, and opened the windows to let all the smoke out, and decided to opt for a sandwich for dinner. He’d had quite enough of fire for one day thanks you very much!
He ate quickly and slumped up the stairs straight to bed after.
He lay in bed and sighed for what seemed like the millionth time today; it certainly had been a long one!
His mind was far too busy to get any sleep, even though he felt exhausted. He let the day catch up with him slowly. He’d hardly had time to process everything when it was happening; he’d acted on instinct. He hadn’t realised quite how grave the situation had been.
He’d saved Ryan’s life!
If it weren’t for his super powers he would be dead right now. Not only that, but he would have died in excruciating pain as he burned alive.
What if he hadn’t become a super hero? What if he didn’t get to him in time to save his life? What if he himself had drowned after the fish incident? Ryan wouldn’t be alive anymore. He would never have the pleasure of laughing with him again; he would never see him again, with their last conversation being an argument!
He dreaded to think what he would be doing now if he had indeed died. Probably swallowing a whole packet of pills and washing them down with some jack.
In that moment, it seemed that life was extremely precious. You never know when it might slip through your fingers. He suddenly felt the urge to take Ryan in his arms and not let go for a very long time, but he knew he couldn’t without seeming overly weird.
Maybe he could just go over to see him without crushing him to death in a hug? His mind flashed back to their last conversation:
“Not going to invite me in?” Colin asked innocently.
“So you can do your impression of a mother hen around me? I don’t think so,” he teased.
Colin sighed in defeat. “Alright then, fair enough.”
Ryan laughed. “I’m probably just going to eat then go straight to bed anyway, it won’t be very interesting.”
‘Hmm,’ he thought. He’d told Colin not to fuss over him, but he hadn’t told the Aercrobat not to! Besides, if he had gone straight to bed like he said, he would already be asleep, so he could just look in through the window to reassure himself of Ryan’s well being.
Smiling at his ingenious plan, he pulled his costume back on and set of for Ryan’s house.
He had really gotten the hang of moving around with his super powers. For this particular time he didn’t want to be seen going to Ryan’s house, so he took a quiet route and ran so fast that he doubted anyone could actually see him.
As it turned out Ryan was not asleep, but he was in his bedroom. He had his window open, and was laying on bed smoking. Colin would have laughed at his typical nonchalant, disobedient behaviour if he hadn’t been so shook up by the seriousness of it.
He shifted to get a closer look at him, when Ryan suddenly turned his attention towards him. His eyes widened momentarily before turning to quickly stub out his cigarette in the ashtray beside his bed.
It was almost as if he knew who was behind the mask. Could he have worked it out?
He was now taking long strides towards the open window, until he came face to face with the Aercrobat.
“Hi,” Ryan said tentatively.
“Hi,” he parroted in a voice that wasn't his normal one.
“Do you wanna come in?” He said, stepping aside to give Colin entrance into the room.
He slipped into the warmth of Ryan’s house gratefully, shutting the window after him to keep the cold night’s air out.
“I just came to see how you were,” Colin said. well, it was kind of the truth, right?
“I’m absolutely fine thanks to you. I was just thinking about that actually; I never said thank you in the ambulance. I was so preoccupied thinking of my mom I... forgot my manners, I guess.”
“That’s ok,” He replied warmly. If he were to be honest he had been so worried himself, that he hadn’t realised either.
“Well… Thank you for saving my life.”
“No problem,” he chuckled.
“So," he spoke after a pause. "What does the ‘A’ stand for?” he asked. gesturing to the crest on Colin’s chest. “The newspapers have been trying to guess the last couple of weeks.”
Colin had been meaning to correct the people in charge of the newspapers somehow. It seemed only right that they knew his name if they were going to report him. Though at least it wasn’t bad press like Spiderman had!
“It stands for ‘The Aercrobat’!” He said, puffing out his chest proudly.
“Why are you called that?”
Colin thought it would be move fun to demonstrate rather than explain. He walked to the middle of the room so he wouldn’t hit anything and jumped up high, spinning his body round and round into an impressive acrobatic arrangement. He landed effortlessly on the balls of his feet in a crouching position.
“Cool,” Ryan awed, making Colin grin widely under his mask. “Can I call you Aero?”
“Uhh, sure.” He’d always loved Ryan’s ‘Col’ nickname for him, now he had another, and it sounded much cooler!
“By the way, if you could compete in the next Olympics, we're bound to win gold in everything!”
Colin laughed in return, but didn’t bother correcting him about his nationality.
“So Aero," he said, trying out the nickname on his tongue. "how did you get your super powers?”
He paused, considering his answer. “I got them in an extremely mundane way, really nothing exciting.”
And so began Ryan’s interrogation; He asked him everything from what his super powers consisted of, to whether he had a girlfriend, and what she would think of him running around the city at all hours. He tried to answer the questions as honestly as he could without giving himself away too much.
It went on for about half an hour of solid questions, during which time it was becoming more and more apparent how tired they both were.
“I think I should go home now, and let you get some sleep.” Colin suggested.
“No wait. Just one more question.”
“Ok,” he agreed reluctantly.
“Does anyone know who you are? The real you.”
Colin frowned. “No, and I don’t want anyone to know for their safety,” He explained. “If someone were to find out who I am, they might use my loved ones to get to me. I don’t want anyone to get hurt because of me.”
“Ahh,” Ryan nodded. “I understand.”
Colin walked towards the window, only to be stopped by a hand on his forearm. He turned to face Ryan again.
“Will you visit me again?”
“That was two questions,” he teased.
Ryan waited for an answer.
“Do you want me to?”
“Yes,” He replied instantly.
“Ok,” He agreed. He’d never been able to deny Ryan anything. “I’ll come see you again soon.”
They said their goodbyes, and Colin hopped out the window, and set off for home.
