A/N - Stephen Fry for king!

Colin approached the door to Ryan’s private room trying to dismiss the irrational fear of Ryan lying in his bed with his life slowly fading away. It was a stupid thought; He would be having some sort of treatment, not simply sitting around in a hospital room if there was anything seriously wrong.

It was those thoughts that made him breathe a sigh of relief when he saw him stubbornly lying on the bed with a mixed expression of irritation and boredom.

With Colin’s sigh Ryan looked up towards the door. His expression changed completely as a slow grin spread across his face, with a mischievous glint in his eye. It was a teasing look in response to his sigh; apparently Ryan thought his worrying was an over-reaction.

“Hi,” Colin started.

“Hey,” replied Ryan, smirk still firmly in place.

“How are you?”

“I’m fine,” He said adamantly, “as I keep saying, but they’re still keeping me here just to make sure.”

“For how long?” Colin asked, the edges of his mouth twitching into an almost smile. Typical Ryan behaviour!

“Couple of hours,” He moaned.

Colin sat in the chair beside his bed, as Ryan started on about how the doctors gave him a bronchoscopy to make sure he was ok. “… They gave me it because I was the last one out and so would have had most damage. They’ve just got me on oxygen every few minutes for now.”

“Sounds like you’re ok. How’s your mom?”

“She’s fine. Dad’s looking after her for now. They’re still planning to go to my cousin’s house tonight before heading back home tomorrow,” he explained. “How did you know she was in too?”

“Oh,” he said as calmly as I could whilst thinking of a feasible answer. “The message on my answering machine,” he answered vaguely. Hey, they didn’t pay him to be an improviser for nothing.

“Hmm, I wouldn’t have thought the nurse would have mentioned that. I guess she wanted to give you the bigger picture.”

At least him seemed to be satisfied with the answer.

“So…” Colin started, changing the subject, “have you told anyone else apart from me?”

“No, I didn’t want to bother anyone else, I won’t be staying long enough to make everyone drop what they’re doing and visit me.”

“So you didn’t mind bothering me then?” He teased.

“They pushed me for a next of kin, and seeing as mum was already here and her next of kin was dad, I thought you could be it.”

At these words a warm comforting feeling spread throughout his body. He knew it didn’t exactly mean a lot, that apart from his mum and dad he was the closest to him in New York. After all the only other people who were close were the fellow cast members of whose line, but nevertheless it still brought a smile to his face, and a feeling of importance to his heart.

“Aww, how sweet,” he replied sarcastically. “I’m touched, really.”

Ryan chuckled.

“So, are you going to tell anyone else that you nearly died today?”

“You’re over-reacting,” he replied, nonchalantly. “Though I guess I should tell them, but I imagine mum and dad will tell the rest of the family, and the people I don’t tell will see it on the news anyway… Vultures!”

Colin couldn’t help but agree; the media would love this. “Do you want me to call them?”

“Would you? Thanks Col,” He grinned.

The next 30 minutes were spent outside, smoking and phoning various cast members, telling them what happened and reassuring them that Ryan was fine and didn’t need any fuss. They all asked to let Ryan know they were thinking of him, and to tell him to get well soon. Colin agreed, and went back inside after telling only the people that were necessary, not wanting to be apart from Ryan for a long time.

When he returned to his room Ryan was moaning loudly at a doctor, telling her that he was ok, and wanted to be discharged. Colin rolled his eyes.

“You should be released in an hour or so Mr Stiles,” She remarked with a hint of irritation creeping into her voice. “And as for going for a cigarette, you won’t be allowed to smoke for a few days after this type of ailment.”

Ryan groaned at the news. Colin chuckled at him, and got a glare in return. He smiled sweetly at him, pleading innocence.

The doctor finished checking his notes, declared that he didn’t need any more o2, and promised to start making preparations to discharge him. She left them to chat for a bit, while she left to fill out the paperwork.

“Well that’s good, at least you’ll be out soon.”

Ryan grunted in agreement.

“How are you getting home? Do you want a lift?”

“Yeah, please, if it’s no trouble or I can get a taxi.

“Nah, I’ll take you. It’s no problem.”

They sat in silence for a while. This was something he loved about Ryan, he could be sat in total silence next to him and still be comfortable, not feeling pressured into talking like he did with most other people.

Ryan appeared to be deep in thought so he let himself lean back in his chair and think. He wondered if Ryan would let him look after him tonight. He doubted it, but it would be nice caring for him. He felt the sudden urge to fan his fingers through Ryan’s hair idly to comfort him.

Ryan cleared his throat, and Colin started guiltily. He hoped his thought hadn’t been written on his face.

“I’m sorry about before, Col,” He said quietly.

Ryan wasn’t the kind of person who liked to apologise; he also tried to avoid being serious if he could help it.

“I shouldn’t have pried,” he continued sincerely. “I should have trusted your reason and believed you when you said you weren’t hung up over that conversation.”

“Don’t worry about it, Ry,” He comforted. “Besides, you were right about me not hanging out with you as much, and I’ll make an effort to go out more often.”

Ryan smiled widely. “Thanks.”

It turned out to be a 45-minute wait after the doctor left, during which time they chatted idly amongst one another. It was brilliant to have his best friend back on speaking terms with him again, and as time went on he realised that in the weeks since he gained his powers he had not had a proper conversation with his best friend. He hadn’t realised how much he actually missed the big lug! He vowed to make good his promise about hanging out with him more. Ryan was like a drug to him, and when the time came to head home he regretted that his fix would soon end.

The doctor came back in to get him to fill out an insurance form, warned him again about laying off the cigarettes for a couple of days, and signed the dispatch form.

Colin hopped out of the room in search of Ryan’s mom’s room. He was just getting dressed and would join him to say goodbye before leaving.

It didn’t take long to get to, after a kind nurse showed him the way. He knocked a few times before gingerly stepping into the room.

It didn’t take Ryan long to join him, and he waited patiently whilst Ryan said his goodbyes to his parents before wishing Mrs Stiles a quick recovery, saying bye to Mr Stiles and escorting Ryan to his car to take him home. The journey was over much too quick for Colin’s liking; Time flies when joking and laughing with Ryan Stiles.

“There we are,” Colin said, hopping out of the car and walking towards Ryan’s doorstep. He hovered as Ryan pulled out his keys, hinting for an invite inside.

“Thanks for the lift, Col. I’ll see you later.”

“Not going to invite me in?” Colin asked innocently.

“So you can do your impression of a mother hen around me? I don’t think so,” he teased.

Colin sighed in defeat. “Alright then, fair enough.”

Ryan laughed. “I’m probably just going to eat then go straight to bed anyway, it won’t be very interesting.”

After saying this Colin did admit he looked quite worn out, and supposed he had been through quite a lot today. He smiled at Ryan, and turned to head back to his car, firing over his shoulder “And no smoking!”

He heard the answering chuckle, and could just imagine Ryan shaking his head. Scooby wasn’t one of his, but mother hen was one of the best impressions Colin did.
