Title: A.I.: Artificial Intelligence Part 1/5
Author: greenforgreen
Rating: G (nothing happens in this part)
Pairings/Characters: Jeff, Brad, and Colin for this part.
Summary: In the year 2045, a new creation by Dr. Mochrie is set to revolutionize science and human nature. It is a robot with intellect far beyond comprehension and a love far greater than you'll know. AU.
Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. This is not meant to harm, slander, or mirror those in this story.

Ah yes, my crossover for the month. I chose to write this in a 5 part set of many drabbles. I try to keep it simplistic but also complex like a real robot. I never written drabbles before so be kind.

Enjoy my fine friends.

In the Beginning...

It was dark.

It was cold.

A low hum of machines whirled around as Dr. Colin Mochrie looked down into a bed of sorts. A blue fluorescent light shown back into his pale face. There was a cloth, covering a figure; a figure that wasn't alive nor dead. No air filled the nonexistent lungs, not a single twitch on the rubber plastic that was skin.

Dr. Mochrie smiled.

It was like he created another son. He showed pride in this creation, this new being. Soon, he would join the rest of the human world. Even if he was metal silicon.

Birth

Finally, the day had come. The many scientists of the lab surrounded Dr. Mochrie and Dr. Brad Sherwood as they would show the world the project they have been working on now for two years. It was a grand discovery; impossible to achieve until now in a time most needed. The others were ecstatic knowing they would be rich. Champagne glasses were passed around as a video camera captured the scene.

“I believe you better show them Junior or they'll jump us,” Dr. Sherwood told his partner.

Dr. Colin nodded and walked away to bring in his greatest work.

Jeff

“It's alright. Come out,” Dr. Mochrie beckoned to the shadows.

Dr. Sherwood and the others watched curiously as the balding man grabbed a hand. A man coughed breaking the silence that was fallen upon the room. With wide eyes, they stared as Dr. Mochrie finally stepped out with a much taller man behind him. The being's eyes held a glassy innocence to them, untouched by human nature. His black hair was neatly combed back for presentation.

“A man?! We have enough of those damn things around! What's so special about him?” one commented.

“This one... can love.”

Small Steps

Jeff, as Dr. Sherwood jokingly named him, was learning quickly about the world around him; it was bedded into his hard drive. He could tell you how many atoms were in an juicy apple slice and tell you what it should taste like without eating. Dr. Mochrie loved teaching this young man about life outside of textbooks. Sherwood would just shake his head, humoring himself out of watching the older man relive fatherhood. The young man understood controversial subjects his creator taught him and started to compute what emotion his circuits could achieve.

It was simplistic, but everything was simplistic.

Now...

Purpose

“Dr. Mochrie, why am I here?”

“Because you are going to change the world, Jeff.”

It was like talking to a child about the universe. Dr. Mochrie told him many times why he was created, but Jeff wanted to be more than just deus ex machina in a world peace march. It was fascinating that a machine could produce thought as complex as human thought.

“Philosophers study the question of purpose.” It was a statement, not a question.

“Yes they do, Jeff. Everyone wants to find their purpose.”

“Do androids, such as myself?”

No answer.

Dual Nature

Humans are two faced creatures. No matter their disposition, they always carry a mask somewhere amongst them to hide. They are hypocritical in the nicest of terms, living a dual nature in their population. Kindness expects reward, no matter how small; frustration is met with satisfaction. All opposing forces against one another. Then came artificial intelligence. People hated the robots; hated them with a passion. They are so quiet... and speak in one tone. They are too intelligent and are blessed with protection against sickness and guilt.

They are disturbing, even if they are as complex as the human race.

In too Deep

“He can't stay here, Colin. They already told us to terminate him days ago.”

Dr. Mochrie wasn't really listening to Sherwood. They were in the lab, overseeing Jeff's progression. There were no problems in his makeup. He could be sold to help bring the humans and mecha together at last. It was a dream of his since he saw an android be beaten to destruction by a group of thugs. He shuddered at the thought. Jeff is different; he could be love and give love. Dr. Mochrie knew this for a fact.

He truly loved him as another son.

Suffocation

It was hard for Dr. Mochrie to breathe. Dan Patterson, the lead scientist of this branch, gave the order to send Jeff to be “melted down into something useful”. Dr. Mochrie couldn't do that; he loved the rob- kid. Such hard work was put into this incredible creation. He would lose his job if he declined the command, but... he had to somehow protect the young man. Why didn't they understand? Jeff looked like any other human; perhaps he could survive... on his own.

The man was gasping for air as a frustrated tear ran down his pale face.

Release

Jeff never been in a car the whole month he stayed at the laboratory.

He was left confused, unable to read the blank face on his creator. Dr. Mochrie decided on this plan the night before, lying to Sherwood and taking Jeff to “the plant”. He had to free Jeff into the wild world; he taught the kid enough and with his hard drive, Jeff would survive. The hardest part would be the goodbye.

“I want you to leave. Find someone to stay with, find shelter, find anything. Stay away from police officers and people with weapons.”

Alone

The mecha was left alone on the side of the road. Why did Dr. Mochrie leave so suddenly with tears building in his eyes? All he had to remember him by was a folder in his memory and the lingering pressure of the tight, shaky hug the older man gave him. Jeff thought about the warning he gave him before setting off. People... find people... stay safe... Find shelter away from men in uniforms. Scared and alone, the young man started walking; GPS mapping in his eyes lead him up the road and to the bright lights in the distance.

Oooh, I simply love the concept! The little headings are a great idea - gives the reader little bites of a whole new world. Keep it up! ^v^
