Colin Mochrie had always wanted a simple life. He wanted what every normal guy wanted: a nice house, a stable job and most importantly someone to share that life with.
Colin already had a house larger than he needed, and had a regular spot on ‘Whose Line is it Anyway’. The only thing he was missing from his life was that all-important partner. He supposed kids would be nice, but his lifestyle choice somewhat restricted that possibility. Not that it mattered when he didn’t have someone to adopt with.
Hopefully today that would all change, as he was planning to ask out his best friend and guy of his dreams, Ryan Stiles. But what with being his best friend and not wanting to lose that friendship and all, he planned to approach the subject very carefully. He didn’t even know if he liked men in the same way he did, so that was a good question to start with.
He was starting to panic as they drew ever closer to Ryan’s dressing room after the taping. Doubts were flickering throughout his head on whether he could ask him the question inconspicuously and what he would say after he knew the answer. And before he knew it they were in the dressing room and Ryan was staring at him expectantly, waiting to find out what it was that he needed to ask him so badly and why he had to drag him back to his dressing room to do it.
Colin vaguely wondered how long he had been waiting, and that thought jerked him into action. He cleared his throat and prayed for the best. “This is kinda an awkward question to ask, but… are you bisexual?” Colin asked lightly, careful not to give too much away.
Ryan spluttered despite the lightness he’d tried for, he looked like he was struggling for words, and Colin wanted to tell him that he didn’t mind what the answer was but from out of nowhere Ryan burst out, “Well, yes I am, But don’t worry I’m not going to come onto you or anything!” He tried to reassure him quickly.
Colin opened his mouth to reply, but he continued. “I don’t wanna mix friendship or colleagues and relationships anyway, it’s a really bad idea. I mean, could you imagine if two of us broke up and didn’t wanna see each other anymore? I’d hate to lose anyone like that, and it would be really awkward at work.”
Colin tried to ignore the stabbing pain in his chest Ryan’s words had caused. He sounded so sure. Like he would never break his rule, or make an exception.
He had to get out of there! He mumbled an excuse to Ryan and hurried to his dressing room and slammed the door behind him. ‘Well that was over quickly,’ he thought to himself, pacing around the room. All that thought about how he would approach the subject, all the psyching himself up for the conversation that would hopefully have changed his life, and it was over within 3 minutes! He hadn’t even fought for him; he hadn’t asked what if it didn’t go wrong? He’d completely wimped out.
He almost spun around to march right back in there and tell him they could make it work, but as he was turning he caught himself in the mirror and felt his confidence drain. ‘Why would he go for me?’ he thought miserably. He sighed, and so did his reflection, confirming his doubts.
It had been 14 years until he’d had the courage to ask him if he was bisexual. He vaguely wondered how long it would be before he had the courage to actually ask him out.
He ended up thinking about Ryan for the majority of the night. He thought about him while making his meal for one, watching TV alone (if you could call it watching), and finally giving up and going to bed shamelessly early for lack of anything better to do.
And then he was in bed, with nothing to distract him from the pain.
Ryan was much too good for him, completely out of his league. The idea of Colin even trying to make him happy was laughable. I mean, why would he want to be with a pasty, balding old man? It seemed that Ryan hadn’t aged since the day he’d met him, but somehow he looked like he was 10 years older than he actually was.
He felt so unbelievably pathetic lusting after a guy he could never get, so much so that his life basically revolved around seeing him. It seemed like he was only ever truly happy when he was around Ryan, laughing and messing around. The rest of the time he spent moaping around feeling sorry for himself and waiting until he could see him again. He dreaded the day whose line would end and he would move back to Canada and Ryan back to Washington. Maybe he could convince him to stay, but he doubted it.
He sighed. All he wanted was a simple life. Was it too much to ask?
