Rating: PG-13 for naughtiness
Pairing: Brad/Ryan
Summary for the chapter: Know thy parents.

Overall Summary: Brad's running his own large business and has everything but what he wants the most: someone to be there for him. After 'purchasing' Ryan from the Utopia group to serve the purpose, he slowly realizes that he's breaking their most important rule: he's falling in love with him. After two years together, two years of love, the time has come for Ryan to be taken away. The rules will change, the game will too and the three friends are going to go through the ultimate test.

A/N: Might be the last chapter I'll be posting for a while! Exams are up! Please leave a comment!

Brad grinned as he ducked another one of Ryan’s punches countering with a punch to his ribs. He had finally consented to actively participating in spars when Colin insisted that it was for the better and Ryan had promised to wear protective gear so that he wouldn’t get hurt. Ryan didn’t show him any such courtesy though and sparred with him and Colin alike though Colin commented that he hit him much lighter than he did Colin.

Catching onto Ryan’s wrist, he pulled him off balance and delivered a hard blow to his shoulder that knocked him to the ground. He had a few seconds to revel over his partial victory when Ryan hooked his legs around his ankles and pulled him to the ground as well. He felt Ryan scrambling to pin him down, but he used his bigger bulk to make it a hard task, the two of them rolling about on the mat as each tried to gain an upper hand. Ryan suddenly pulled away from him and rolled away, getting to his feet in one motion. Brad followed, albeit it slower and took on a defensive stance, waiting for Ryan to make the next move. He could see Ryan’s smirk from his position and that made him even more nervous; Ryan only donned that when he was planning to finish the fight.

Suddenly, Ryan charged forward and lashed out with a punch that was easily intercepted, but he slammed his palm against Brad’s chest, knocking him back a few steps. Seeing his prey weakened, Ryan removed all the stops and used his trademark move. Brad’s eyes widened in surprise as Ryan leapt up right before he felt the hard pressure of a foot against his chest and the next thing he knew, he was staring up at a clear sky in a daze as Ryan hooted from somewhere out of the line of his vision.

“And the jump kick ends the fight again,” Colin’s voice broke in and he was suddenly lifted up slightly into a sitting position as he tried to remember what he had been doing.

“Jesus....” Brad wheezed, “kick.....lethal.....”

“And that’s why I use it,” Ryan grinned as he squatted in front of Brad, “it’s one of the first moves I learnt from Colin.”

“And you learnt it well,” Colin smiled, ruffling his hair, “I haven’t seen anyone use that kick so well.”

“Go me!” Ryan laughed, helping Brad to his feet, “you okay?”

“I will be,” Brad rubbed his chest, wincing a little. Ryan’s smile turned devious as Brad felt another hand, not his own, creep up and rest against the centre of the ache.

“Need me to make you feel better?” Ryan purred, low enough only for him to hear, but Colin gathered what that look meant and beat a hasty retreat, leaving the two of them alone.

“The ache’s getting a little lower now,” Brad smirked back, leaning back against the mat and pulling Ryan on top of him.

“Well, we can’t have that,” Ryan placed a light kiss on his jaw, “But we should probably go inside for that.”

“Give me a minute then,” Brad closed his eyes and let himself relax, feeling the throb in his chest gradually fade into a twinge.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Ryan asked, “I didn’t hit you too hard, did I?”

“Let’s just say that I’m now completely sure that I will definitely pity the people receiving that kick.”

“I’m sorry,” Ryan murmured, looking very apologetic, “I didn’t mean-”

“It’s alright,” Brad interrupted, smiling at him, “Believe me, I’m really glad that I know for myself how much that kick can hurt. If that was you holding back, there’s no way anyone could lay a hand on you. That’ll definitely help me sleep better at night.”

“You’re not sleeping well?”

“Well enough. I’m fine.”

Ryan opened his mouth to protest when Brad decided to shut him up the best way possible. Ryan moaned as Brad’s tongue slid across his own and retaliated with a fervor that surprised Brad, though it really shouldn’t have. Brad could feel the kiss sitr up familiar sensations down south and felt Ryan’s mouth leave his own and kiss down his neck....

*SPLASH*

“AUGH!” Brad yelled in shock as the freezing old water made contact with his previously heated skin. Ryan was in no better state, having gotten even wetter since he had been the one on top. Brad felt a bit of chill as Ryan’s eyes took on a deadly gleam and almost considering feeling sorry for Colin, but then the sensation of his dick trying to mate with his colon threw that feeling right out of his mind.

“I’m going to kill you!” Ryan yelled, getting up and chasing Colin around the yard for a good ten minutes before both of them flopped to the ground in exhaustion. Brad got up and helped Ryan to his feet, suggesting that they take off the wet clothes before they caught a cold. Ryan’s response was a leer and an offer to share a shower.

If it hadn’t been for the fact that the shower was in Colin’s parents’ house, he would have probably taken him up on the offer. As it was, he felt guilty for what had happened last night in their house, but couldn’t make himself regret it. It had been so long since he had experienced Ryan’s touch, since he had felt Ryan’s skin under his hands and now that he had gotten another fix, he never wanted to let him go again.

He laughed as he watched Colin get Ryan in a head lock while on the ground and give him a noogie, the other man cursing as he tried to get out of his grip, twisting every which way while shouting death threats and he had to wonder why he was ever surprised Colin was virtually Ryan’s brother. But, he had to admit, the Colin he was thinking about now was very different from the man who had breezed into his life with the subtlety of a hurricane and had given him the news that would have haunted him for his entire life had he not chosen the path he did. The cold, calm killer had been just a façade, a mask to hide the fact that Colin, in reality, was the sweetest, nicest man one would ever meet.

Finally, Ryan managed to shake Colin off but he didn’t make any effort for revenge, instead grumbling and getting to his feet, mumbling about needing a proper shower now to get the stink of Colin’s armpit off him. Colin retorted by sticking out a foot to kick Ryan’s ankle, but Ryan, after two years of training ingrained in him, dodged it smoothly and, sticking his tongue out at Colin, quickly dashed into the house.

Brad watched Colin watch him go with pride in his eyes, a look that he was sporting much more lately before he followed him, Brad on his heels. Brad accepted the bottle of water from Andrea with a thankful smile and made his way up the stairs, sipping as he went. He heard the bathroom door shut and, a couple of moments later, the shower turn on. He knew he should move away from the door, but the idea of Ryan....under the hot steamy shower, water cascading down that lovely, long body....

Ryan let out a gasp as he heard the bathroom door opened and then yelped as two arms suddenly encircled his waist and pulled him back against a wet, clothed body. He laughed and pushed at the grip halfheartedly, “Are you crazy?!”

“For you, yes,” Brad murmured, nuzzling his neck with a smile.

“I thought you didn’t want to do this under their roof?” Ryan teased, one hand trailing up to caress the wet hair at the back of Brad’s hair.

“We’ll save hot water this way.”

“Then get out of those damn clothes.”

Two minutes later, they were kissing frantically under the hot shower, steam clouding up the shower wall and the tiles where they pressed up against them. Ryan let out a whine as Brad trailed his hands down his sides to his hips, pulling him closer as he tugged at the back of his neck to stick his tongue in deeper.

“God, I’ve missed this,” Ryan murmured, between kisses.

“I’ve missed you,” Brad responded, kissing his jaw.

“I love you.....”

“Love you too.....”

Ryan smiled and then turned off the shower, stepping out and drying himself off. Brad followed reluctantly but then felt a spark of mischief light itself and took his towel, drying Ryan’s hair off roughly, ignoring his yelps and then laughing his head off at the mess he had made of his normally well-styled hair.

“You goof!” Ryan shouted playfully, throwing his towel at him before trying to finger comb his hair into some semblance of order, “Never the hair!”

Brad didn’t hear him, coming closer and fingering the damp, sagging strands with a thoughtful look. “It’s longer than I thought,” he said.

“Of course it is. It just looks shorter because of the way I style it,” Ryan responded, pulling away to pull on some jeans before moving to the mirror in front of the sink, grabbing the hair gel sitting there and quickly spiking his hair back to it’s normal state.

“Why do you do that?” Brad asked, donning his jeans as well.

“My hair would come into my eyes when I started training with Colin and I refused to cut it short and give Greg the satisfaction. He always wanted me to cut my hair short. We compromised at a couple of inches and then spiking.”

“Hm,” Brad walked up behind him and placed a kiss at the back of his neck, “Will you grow it long again?”

“Why are you so obsessed with my hair?” Ryan asked, amused.

“Well, you look gorgeous either way,” Brad hugged him tightly, savoring the warmth, “But I miss it.”

“I thought you loved me for me,” Ryan’s voice took on a wounded tone.

“I miss the way it looked spread on the pillow when you slept beside me,” Brad breathed into his ear, “the way you’d always brush it back when you were embarrassed or tug on it when you were nervous. And I especially miss brushing it away when I kissed you right here....” his lips lovingly caressed the juncture where Ryan’s neck met his shoulder.

Ryan shivered at the light kiss and pulled away before they needed another colder shower, “We really shouldn’t....not until tonight anyway.”

Brad grinned as Ryan pressed a last kiss to his lips, “Can’t wait.”

“So, would you like to look at the boxes after lunch?”

“Hm?” Ryan looked up from where he had just taken a large mouthful of roast beef.

“Chew,” Andrea responded automatically, “I was talking about your parents’ boxes. We mentioned them yesterday, remember?”

“Oh yeah,” Ryan swallowed, “after lunch sounds good.”

“Or not. You don’t have to, it’s your choice, after all, so if you feel-”

“It’s alright,” he interrupted, “To tell you the truth, I’m kinda looking forward to it.”

After lunch, Andrew led them to the attic, a dark musty place with several objects cluttering it. There was a small window where the late afternoon sunlight streamed in, shining on old pieces of furniture covered with sheets and a pile of boxes that had obviously been dusted off much more recently than the other things stored in there.

“We stored whatever we could,” Andrea spoke softly, “and whatever we could salvage from your house. A lot of things were lost, but we got most of the things that were really important.”

“Which one should we start with?” Andrew asked, looking over at Ryan.

“How about the.....top one?” he lifted up the box and put it down, sitting down comfortably on the floor and opening the flaps, wrinkling his nose as the dust made him sneeze.

“Tissue?” Wayne handed him one, having expected the reaction to the dust after remembering the time they had cleaned out Brad’s basement.

“Thank you,” Ryan sniffled, “I hate dust.”

“I’m sorry, I should have dusted them off better-”

“It’s fine,” he smiled at Andrea as she appeared to get more flustered, “I more concerned with what’s in the boxes than on them.”

“I hope you’ll find answers to all the questions you have,” she responded.

Ryan took out the first item at the top of the box and brushed away the dust coating it. It was a photograph, an old one, of the younger versions of the elders in the other room, a child that looked barely seven years old that could only be Colin and two other individuals that he had never seen before but still looked so familiar. Ryan smiled, feeling tears build up in his eyes as traced the smiling faces of his mother and father as they gazed into the camera, happy and free. His father had a loving arm wrapped around his wife’s shoulders as she cradled a small baby in her arms and it occurred to him that that newly born boy was him. He felt Brad take the picture in one hand and then felt his other hand creep around his shoulders as he looked at it with a loving smile.

“Andrea was right, ya know?” Brad said conversationally, “you look exactly like your dad.”

“Yeah....” Ryan nodded against his shoulder, sniffing as Wayne handed him a tissue to dry his eyes, “except for the hair. I have.....had my mom’s hair.”

“No doubt,” Brad’s hand crept up slightly and stroked the blonde hair right above his ear, “I still say you should grow it again. It suited you.”

Ryan snorted, “I looked like a woman.”

“Exactly.”

Brad yelped as Ryan elbowed him in the side and snatched the picture back, glaring at him with no heat, but plenty of playfulness, which was just what Brad wanted. He didn’t want Ryan to cry and lament the loss of his family, but rather wanted that he learn about them and cherish the love they had had for him, even if it was for a short time. As much as he wished he could, he couldn’t go back in time and stop Ryan’s abduction, but at least he could try and support him now.

“This was something of your mother’s,” Andrea drew out a chainless locket and opened it to reveal a similar photograph on one side of the locket, “She planned to take another photograph of us when you and Colin were grown up to put in it. To show her how time had changed. There’s nothing a mother wants more than to see her children grown up after all.”

Ryan took the locket in his hand, staring at the picture and Brad saw him open his mouth to say something before Andrew interrupted, “Yes, you can. This is your parents’ property and who has better claims over it than you?”

Ryan smiled in thanks and slipped it into his pocket before rummaging through the box and coming up with a beat up leather jacket that had been rather well cared for despite it’s age. The initials ‘JL’ were emblazoned across the back in white lettering. The leather was a little dull, but with a little effort, it could easily be restored again.

“I think you can guess that’s your father’s,” Andrea pointed out, “It was Jaden’s favorite. He’s had it as long as I’ve known him, I think.”

“Yeah, it was a birthday present from Lizzy,” Andrew reminisced, “it wasn’t easy to keep it preserved, but I think it’s good enough, don’t you?”

Ryan grinned and slipped it on over his shirt, tugging on the lapels to straighten it, “What do you think?”

“Perfect fit,” Brad murmured, smoothing his hands along Ryan’s shoulders and dusting it off slightly, “for a perfect man.”

The rest of the afternoon seemed to fly by as Ryan learnt more and more about the parents he had never known and Brad was extremely pleased to see Ryan finally open up to Andrea and Andrew, answering all their questions about his childhood and life. He, Wayne and Colin had gone out to get take out for dinner, leaving them alone for a private conversation and when he saw how animatedly Ryan was describing the children he had met in Utopia, he knew that finally, Ryan had managed to accept his past.

“You must prove that tomorrow,” he heard Andrea say as they entered the kitchen with Chinese take-out.

“Prove what?” Brad asked curiously, setting down his load on the counter.

“He says he’s quite a cook, so I proposed he make lunch tomorrow,” Andrea said, eyeing Ryan with what looked like a challenge in her eyes.

“Fine, but don’t get mad at me if it turns out better than yours, mom,” Ryan teased.

Mom? Brad turned to look at him in surprise and noticed Wayne and Colin doing the same, Colin looking nothing less of shell shocked. Ryan went over to Colin and snapped his fingers in front of his eyes, waving his hand to try and get his attention.

“Helllllooooo? Colin? What’s wrong, big bro?” Ryan asked with the sort of sincerity only someone of his acting talent could fake. A huge, nearly scary smile broke over Colin’s face, right before he threw his arms around Ryan and hugged him hard enough to lift him a couple of inches off the ground.

“Ack! Oxygen! Oxygen! I need to breathe!” Ryan gasped, sucking in a deep breath when Colin finally released him. “Jesus, you trying to kill me?”

“It’s just what us big brothers do,” Colin retorted, that smile still on his face but it was more tender than ecstatic.

“Then I get pranking privileges?” Ryan asked with a smirk, “you might want to watch your bed tonight.”

Colin laughed and Ryan glanced over at Brad, winking at him as Colin threatened to kill him if he put anything in his bed. Brad smiled as Ryan and Colin started arguing again until Mother Mochrie told them both to pipe down or she’d ground them. It was heartening to see the Mochries interacting like a complete family, something he had seen for the first time. Sure, they loved each member of their family dearly, but he could see that they were missing something or that there was something close in their reach but they just couldn’t get it. Ryan was that something. He was what the Mochrie family was missing and now that he had accepted them, it was like a jigsaw puzzle coming together when one thought that they were missing a piece, only for it to be right under their nose. He laughed as Andrea ordered Ryan to finish his vegetables and Ryan retorted by pouting and folding his arms, looking to all the world like a two year old. He also didn’t miss the fact that Ryan was still wearing his father’s leather jacket, though it had been cleaned so that it looked nearly new.

“Ryan?”

Attention turned to Andrew who had been exchanging glances with Colin throughout dinner, as if they were trying to find the right time to say what they wanted to.

“There’s a couple of things we want to give you,” he continued, getting up, “would you mind moving to the living room?”

Ryan threw Colin a curious glance but Colin only shrugged with a blank face, giving away nothing. Entering the living room, he sat down between Brad and Wayne as the Mochrie men left for a moment, coming back with two things.

“This is just something that we think you could use,” Andrew spoke up, looking at the item he was holding with something bordering on worship, “I think you’re the rightful owner of this, at the very least.”

The item Colin was holding was a folded vest, “It’s a bullet proof vest. Your dad used to wear these all the time and it saved his life on many occasions. You’ll need one, especially if you’re just like him; gotta get the job done and screw the consequences because you believe it’s the right thing to do.”

“I managed to get it specially made for you,” Andrew smiled, “it wasn’t easy, but it’s yours now.”

“You’ll need it,” Colin added.

Ryan’s grin was huge as he unfolded the black vest, looking like a kid at Christmas time. Even if he knew somewhere in the back of his mind that a bullet proof vest meant that the upcoming task was very dangerous, he chose to ignore it for the moment.

“And this,” Andrew broke him out of his thoughts, “is something the family receives when an officer.....dies in the name of duty. It’s had a place of honor in our home for years, but now it’s time for it to be passed on. I hope you’ll care for it as much as we did.”

Ryan’s grin disappeared into an unreadable expression as he accepted the badge, holding it in both hands like it was the most sacred thing in the world. To him, it was. He was holding the piece of proof that told him his father was a hero, someone who wanted to help people and died doing the same. He felt a gentle finger swipe at his cheek and the feeling of wetness made him realize that there were a couple of tears sliding down his face, splattering onto the badge and smudging his eyesight. He wiped at them quickly and looked up at the Mochries, his parents’ friends....and his family.

“Thank you,” Ryan whispered, looking at all three of them with a grateful smile, “Just.....thank you.”

“No,” Andrea murmured, coming forward and hugging him tightly, “Thank you for coming back to us.”

Brad and Wayne smiled at each from behind Ryan’s back as he returned the hug with the same amount of feeling behind it. They had accomplished one of their first unspoken missions that had been assigned to them the moment Ryan had entered their lives: giving him a family. Now that Brad looked at Andrea, Andrew and Colin, he couldn’t help but figure that rather than just Ryan gaining a family, they had become part of that family as well. He just hoped that his family would survive the test coming up in two days.
