Chip is the most animated sleeper. Greg often watches him, when he can’t sleep, the way he shifts and stirs, and the rapid movements of his eyes behind his eyelids.
Greg can hardly ever sleep nowadays; Chip’s presence in his bed, the warmth of his skin, his deep and steady breathing... Greg don’t want to get used to it.
What started out one drunk night as kissing in the elevator, ended in a relationship now in its third month. And now Greg has started to worry, worry he might actually have feelings for this man, when it so obviously won’t – can’t - last. He’s scared he’ll have to let go.
He stays awake at night so he won’t get used to not sleeping alone.
He sits by the window; the view is obscured by condensation, the lights from passing cars blurred. He puts a finger on the cold glass, draws a curvy line. It begins as a heart, but he stops halfway and puts a dot underneath. To him, love is still a big questionmark. Is sharing his bed with Chip love? Is sharing himself with Chip love?
Is being afraid to lose him love?
He hears Chip moving behind him, but doesn’t realise he’s woken up before he’s suddenly right beside him, and gives Greg a start. He turns around to see Chip dressed only in his grey pajamas pants, looking at him with a strange, dark, if not completely awake look. Greg’s about to speak, when Chip takes hold of him and pulls him up; and man, does his strength surprises Greg, every single time. But he’s so gentle and so caring, and when he wraps his strong arms around Greg, and Greg can feel his warmth and the safe weight of his body, he’s sure he’ll cry. But Chip’s lips tell him Chip won’t let him, and Chip’s hands, stripping off his shirt, invite him to join Chip in bed.
“It gets cold without you.”
