Well, I thought the time was ripe for me to actually post something here, so here is the 1sentence challenge fic I completed to test the waters. I know that someone did this about two years back on this comm, and as they eloquently put this challenge is only completed by enthusiastic and sometimes dubious use of commas and semi-colons. :D Here's the first 25 of 50.
Author: Chuckney
Pairing: Ryan/Colin
Prompt Set: Epsilon
Rating: PG-13
Summary: 50 sentences. Moments in time, sweeping statements. Angst, romance, guilt, fluff, humour (she hopes). Snatches from the beginning of their relationship, the middle of their relationship, the end of it all and some relationships that might not ever even begin. I hope you enjoy.
#1. Motion.
Only Colin could have dreamed up a date for two grown men at a fairground; Ryan deigned it silly but was so glad he did.
#2. Cool.
Colin could never be sure whether it was the sweater around his shoulders that warmed him or the fact that Ryan would always give it to him before he even needed to ask.
#3. Young.
Her tiny, perfect hand closed around his finger and her laughter splashed like a brook through a sunlit forest; he closed his eyes and longed for the days when things were that simple.
#4. Last.
Fame, fortune, wives, children, lovers: it was the ultimate tale of having your cake and eating it, and they both knew it could never last.
#5. Wrong.
It took Colin less than one glance to gauge there was something wrong; wordlessly he offered his embrace and wordlessly Ryan accepted.
#6. Gentle.
“Plenty of time for gentle when we’re old, Col,” he said, grinning like a shark, and pounced.
#7. One.
There were several thousand people sitting before him, Colin thought, as he and Brad surveyed the crowd, but after spotting a certain face in the front row it felt like only one.
#8. Thousand.
Ever since he was a kid, he had loved to eat sprinkles: Ryan’s chest made the perfect bowl.
#9. King.
Ryan would have loved to have that strange, sharp way with words his lover had, but as long as his imitation of Elvis could crack a Colin-smile at twenty paces, he was happy.
#10. Learn.
“Our top story today: a school for retired guard dogs was found with its windows and doors walled up in the early hours of the misty morning. The people trapped inside tried to get out but to no avail, which just goes to show - you can’t reach a cold fog through bricks… How’s that, Ry?”
#11. Blur.
The memory of his first date with Pat stuck in his mind as a contented blur: his first day with Colin remained like crystal.
#12. Wait.
Colin heard his name growled and looked up in time to see a freshly showered Ryan let his towel fall to the floor: the paperwork become instantly less urgent.
#13. Change.
Colin was far too easy going to properly resent being the in-house female character, but he enjoyed making sure Ryan got his share of the role as girl.
#14. Command.
People said he had Ryan wrapped around his little finger: Colin responded that Ryan didn’t bend that way.
#15. Hold.
The harder he tried to hold onto everything, the further it slipped away, until he felt as if he were stranded at sea, an island of despair.
#16. Need.
After receiving a gift-wrapped bottle of hair gel from Ryan as a merry jest one spring Saturday, Colin refused all intimacy for a week: Ryan never made the same mistake again.
#17. Vision.
He managed to keep a straight face as he felt two large hands close neatly over his eyes, plunging him into darkness, but when the voice of Carol Channing asked him to ‘guess who’ Colin laughed until tears were rolling down his aching cheeks.
#18. Attention.
“Are you even listening to me?” she said shrilly and the guilt swamped his fantasies like a swell of nausea.
#19. Soul.
Colin’s eyes are so open, Ryan sometimes wishes he would keep that soulful look just for him: he’s ashamed of himself but he thinks it anyway.
#20. Picture.
He is too embarrassed to suggest it: Colin saves him from having to say anything by steering them toward the photo booth himself.
#21. Fool.
“I was a fool to think you could ever put me first!” he spat.
#22. Mad.
He had never seen Colin this angry before and it scared the living daylights out of him.
#23. Child.
Ryan saw an innocence in Colin’s sleeping form that reminded him of his own children: it made him want to cry.
#24 & #25, Now & Shadow.
Could they risk it all, their wives and children, the lives that they had built around themselves on one perfect here-and-now? He looked at his companion with shadowed eyes, took a breath and made his decision.
Any feedback is much appreciated! Also, can someone tell me if they actually *get* #10? I worried a lot over that one...

Date: 2008-09-28 10:11 am (UTC)These? Are fabulous. Just what I wanted to read after a couple of hours of studying for the Phonetics exam of D00m. Thank you, looking forward to the second half!
In re: #10: I get the pun but I'm not sure about the context. x)

Date: 2008-09-28 11:43 am (UTC)I did hope someone would like #6 - writing it gave me a smile :D
And thanks for picking up on #10. You're right, it doesn't really fit into any context but I really wasn't sure what to do with it - that prompt offered me no inspiration whatsoever. If you can think of any alternatives or suggestions to improve it, please tell me, but otherwise I was planning on giving it up as a bad lot.
Thank you again for your kindness!

Date: 2009-01-16 08:36 pm (UTC)Your sentences are great. It is quite a talent to put across so many ideas and emotions in single sentences, resisting any urges to continue on with the 'story'. You pulled it off brilliantly.
Favourites here include 7, 10, 14, 16 and 17. I do love them all though.
As for the #10 thing, well, I love it. I lol'ed a lot when I read that. As for context, I kinda read it as a Weird Newscasters game, with the "how's that Ryan?" as more of an internal afterthought. As if they have some on-going challenge regarding Colin's news anchor intros or something.
Anyway, ramble. In short, loved these.

Date: 2009-01-16 08:54 pm (UTC)And I'm glad I could bring something to the table as far as #10 goes. Personal interpretation is one of the greatest things about reading and writing, I'm sure you'll agree.
