Remembrance

Rating: PG
Pairing: Col/ Greg
Summary: A time to remember today
Disclaimer: I’m not one of those right wing nuts, so I’m not shouting ‘God bless America’. I’m just writing what I remembered of that morning when the planes slammed into the World Trade Center towers on 9/11 7 years ago today.
Colin sat in the dark and remembered.
He sat and remembered, back when he and Greg were still reeling from their first encounter. He remembered sitting down early that morning and flipping on the television, only to see something that made his sleep muzzy brain go…wait.
Greg remembered that day, too.
He’d been waiting for Colin to come back to bed with their coffee, but he never showed. Distantly he heard the tv chatting and got up, irritated that Colin wasn’t rushing back in for more good lovin’. He stood by the entrance of the hallway calling Colin’s name, but Colin wouldn’t look at him. As he watched, the beautiful man dropped the mugs of coffee and brought his hands to his mouth, true terror on his face. Greg rushed forward, ignoring the coffee staining the rug and took Colin into his arms.
His desperate questions went unanswered until Colin pointed a shaking finger at the television screen.
Greg turned just in time to see the side of a tall skyscraper burst into flames, the screams of people on the small screen echoing around the predawn quiet of their living room as the two buildings were engulfed in black smoke and fire.
Dimly, Colin could make out the soft thuds of people leaping off the rooftops of the buildings, as flames roared ever higher. And with each sickening noise, Colin would shake in Greg’s arms, wanting to do something, to save them. Anything. A soft moan escaped his lips as tears fell.
Colin cried out as the first building fell, turning away as the people below scattered, trying to outrun the wall of dust and shrapnel only to be buried alive.
Greg pressed Colin, shaking, into the curve of his neck, his eyes riveted to the screen in front of him as the second building fell.
Without a sound he shut the screen off, cutting of the cries, plunging the room into darkness, and held Colin tighter, breathing in his scent, trying to process what he’d seen. Distantly he heard Colin whispering something between his sobs. “Those people… those poor people…”
Greg shut his eyes tightly, burying his nose in the soft hair behind Colin’s ear, trying to chase away the cries and the roar of the crumbling buildings.
And so they sat in the darkness of their living room, curled around one another, letting the blackness settle around them like a comfortable cloak, no longer haunting them with visions and screams.
The soft skritch of a match hissed, it’s brilliance as it flared throwing sharp shadows about the room. Colin sighed softly as Greg lit the simple white candle and sat back, once more fitting into Colin’s arms as though they had been made for him.
They sat and watched the flame.
And they remembered.

Date: 2008-09-20 10:09 pm (UTC)Yeah, woke up that morning and walked into the living room, and mom did the slow horror-movie turn when you know the bad guy is right behind you and said "You're gonna remember this day for the rest of your life, babe"
Very eerie moment. Very Kennedy Assassination-esque in its memorability

Date: 2008-10-05 05:58 pm (UTC)I can see this so well - how Colin would feel it so much and they would both need to hold each other. This is so good because almost everyone in the world can relate to it, and to think of the world united against such a thing is small comfort in the midst of its bleakness.
I came in home from school and couldn't understand why there were no kids' shows on for me to watch. I look over to my mum who was ironing by the window. She simply said "Someone's done a terrible thing." and even though I didn't really understand the pictures on TV I understood when I saw her face.
