Chapter 3 - Chip
It was Friday, the fifth day at his new school, and for once in his life, Jeff felt comfortable with his new environment and friends. He had friends who welcomed him with open arms, friends who he didn’t have to prove himself worthy to, and friends who would watch his back if he would watch theirs. It was at lunch time that day he had his first chance to be there for one of his friends.
“Can I stay at your place tonight?” Chip asked Colin with high hopes.
“Sorry, no can do,” replied Colin regretfully. “My grandparents are flying in from Canada tonight.” Chip hung his head and took a bite of his sandwich. Lunch was normally the best time of the day for Chip, but today he wasn’t his usual, hyper self.
“Greg?” he asked, lifting his head up, getting his hopes up again.
“Sorry,” said Greg. “My parents are out of town and they said I can’t have anyone over until they get back.” Chip nodded to show that he understood. He put his sandwich down and sat back, thinking of what he should do.
“What did you do this time?” asked Ryan patting him on the back.
“Nothing,” he said sadly. “I woke up, went downstairs and he just started shouting at me. He said that I shouldn’t come home tonight.”
“No doubt he was drunk again,” said Drew chewing a mouthful of food. This was the chance Jeff had been waiting for a couple of days. Something that would let him show that he was part of the group and would help them when they needed help.
“You could stay at my house,” he suggested.
“Really? You mean it?”
Jeff nodded. “My dad would be fine with it. I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but I feel like I should help.” Chip immediately got up and gave Jeff a hug.
“Thanks buddy, you have no idea how much a appreciate this!” Then the bell rang warning them that their next lessons would start in 5 minutes.
“Meet me by the benches!” shouted Jeff down the hall way.
“Dad! I’m home!” shouted Jeff leading Chip in through the door. “I have Chip with me!” There was no answer. He wondered into the kitchen in search of Nick only to find a note stuck on the fridge door.
Went out shopping for food. There’s brownies in the fridge. Should be home by 4pm. call my cell if you need me. Dad *kisses*
He went back to the living room to find Chip looking at the pictured on the wall. “Is that you?” he pointed to a picture of a little boy wearing lipstick, with his lip puckered, ready for a kiss.
Jeff went red and smiled shyly. “Yeah, that’s me.” Chip chuckled, wishing his parents were like Jeff’s. He wished he had parents who would embarrass him like normal parents would by taking embarrassing pictures of his childhood and putting them on display, or giving him kisses in public. However, he was stuck with his Dad. He frowned and sighed, trying to forget the horrors of his childhood.
“Are you okay?” asked Jeff.
“Yeah,” he said, putting on a fake smile. “I’m fine.”
“Okay,” Jeff replied, unsure if he really was. “My dad has gone shopping he should be home in an hour or two. Brownie?”
For the next hour or two they spent their time in Jeff’s room, talking and listening to the awesome riffs of iron maiden. Nick walked into the house just before 4 with his arms full of shopping bags. “Jeff!” he shouted as he put the bags down in the kitchen. Jeff came running down the stairs followed by Chip. “Could you help me bring in the rest of the shopping?”
“Yep. And Chip’s here. Can he stay over tonight?”
“Of course. Chip, have you phoned your parents to let them know you’re here?” he asked putting some food in the fridge as Jeff went out to the car to bring in the rest of the shopping.
“No. Joe wont care.”
“Joe?” asked Jeff as he came in the house with more bags.
“My father,” said Chip sadly.
“I’m sure he cares where you are!” said Nick putting more food away. “What kind of parent doesn’t?”
“Dad, don’t go there,” Jeff whispered to Nick so Chip couldn’t hear. “I don’t know the whole story yet. All I know is that his Dad kicked him out of the house.”
“Chip, dear. Take a seat. I’m going to make us some tea and the 3 of us are going to have a little chat.” Jeff grabbed his fathers arm and pulled him close.
“Don’t. I’m serious.”
“So am I.” Chip sat down at the kitchen table as instructed to while nick put the water to boil. He opened a fresh box of cookies, put them on a plate and put them on the kitchen table. Jeff took one and gestured with his hand for Chip to take one. Chip took one and took a small bite of it, nibbling it cautiously. Moments later Nick placed a cup of tea in front of Chip and sat down to his right. Jeff was sitting to his left.
“Am I in trouble?” asked Chip who had no idea what was going on.
“No, of course you’re not, Sweetie,” Nick laughed, rubbing Chip on the back reassuringly. “I want you to tell me the story of you father. Why did he kick you out?” Chip shrugged. “If you don’t tell us we can’t help you.”
“It’s nothing out of the ordinary,” he mumbled. “It happens a lot. Once, maybe twice a month.”
“Aw Sweetie,” said Nick putting his tea down. He gave Chip a warm, friendly hug. “Now, what’s the story behind all this?” Jeff moved his chair closer towards Chip and put his arm around him.
“My dad hates me.”
“Any idea why?” Chip shook his head, as tears began to stream from his eyes. Jeff got up to go retrieve a box of tissues.
“I think he blames me for mom’s death,” he muttered as Jeff handed him a tissue.
“Honey, where are you going?”
“To pick up Chip from hockey practise.”
“Be careful the roads are icy,” he said kissing his wife.
“I’ll be back soon.” She said as she left the house. She carefully made her way to the car parked in the drive way. As she got in the ignited the engine and backed out. Seconds later she was out of site, on her way to pick up Jeff.
An hour later he got a call. “Is this Mr. Esten?” asked the man on the other end of the line.
“Yes, it is. Who’s calling?”
“My name is Doctor Jarvis. I’m sorry to inform you, that your wife has been killed in a car crash.”
“I was 8 then. He has never looked at me the same way since. Now, he’s just a cold hearted bastard.” Chip’s eyes were red and puffy, with a never ending river of tears streaming from them.
“Oh sweetie!” said Nick, consuming him in a warm, embrace. “You can stay here as long as you need to.”
“Thank you,” Chip whispered, letting all the tears out as if he was releasing the pain he held in his heart.
They spoke nothing more of it all evening. The boys watched ‘the nightmare before Christmas’ as Chip hadn’t seen it, (shame on him) while Nick made dinner. Jeff made the bed in the spare bedroom for Chip and they both wondered off to bed in the wee hours of the morning.

Date: 2007-01-26 05:49 pm (UTC)It's a look he gets in his eyes sometimes, such as when he's throwing an insult at Colin. He looks as if he means it.
He's probably extremely lovely, I just don't see it.
