The first meeting between Ryan and Colin at lunchtime went something like this:
“You’re a new kid aren’t you?”
“…”
The not so receptive welcome didn't deter Colin, who tilted his head slightly to one side, giving Ryan a strange look from under long eyelashes which should have been illegal on a boy.
“I’m Colin Mochrie. It’s okay if you’re scared. I was scared too first time I came here.” Colin continued as he sat down next to Ryan, throwing his legs over the edge of the steps and swinging them slightly, looking out across the school grounds.
Ryan didn’t reply once more, staring at his knees and positively trembling with unconcealed nervousness.
“Are you a mute?” The question was blunt, Ryan’s head snapping up in honest surprise, green eyes wide and mouth open slightly, hand lingering over the sandwich balanced somewhat precariously on his uniform.
“My mom says I shouldn’t talk to strangers.” Ryan’s voice was small and vulnerable, eyes filling with unshed tears, the only reply he could come up with. But at least it dispelled Colin’s theory.
”I told you my name so I don’t think I’m a stranger anymore.” Colin’s voice was matter-of-fact, taking a bite out of his apple before continuing, words slightly garbled, “But you’re still a stranger. What’s your name?”
“Ryan…”
“Nice to meet you Ryan! Have you made any new friends in your class yet?”
“No…they don’t like me.”
“Why not?”
”…too quiet.”
“You’re just scared. I got scared once, this time when we went fishing in some river. My dad caught this huge fish and it almost snapped his… the line you put the bait on and stuff. But when he got it onto the boat it was so big I thought it might eat me.”
Ryan looked up, genuine interest written across his face, picking up one half of his sandwich. When Colin didn’t continue he prodded the conversation gently with a question that quavered slightly in the middle. “What did you do then?”
“I asked my father if it was going to eat me. He said it wasn’t going to and then showed me how to properly cut it up and everything.” There was a note of pride present in Colin’s voice. “I bet you don’t know how to do that.”
Shaking his head, Ryan took a bite of his sandwich, chewing on the white bread with tuna in it thoughtfully.
“Want me to tell you another story?”
“Yes, please!”
Colin chattered on about his family and the all things he and his dad did together, from cutting fish to sawing wood to make tables and chairs for the furniture place his dad owned (Colin was never allowed to do anything but watch, but he thought that was important anyway) while Ryan ate his lunch, feeling slightly less nervous then he had all day. When the bell rang signalling the end of lunch they went there separate ways, Colin crying out a ‘see you tomorrow’ and Ryan happily making his way towards his classroom, mulling over the lunchtime spent with Colin, ecstatic that he had made a new friend.
--
“So son how was your first day?” Ryan’s dad rumbled as he entered the house, pausing briefly to plant a kiss on the cheek of his wife, who was humming slightly as she stirred the pans on the oven. At the question she smiled lightly even as Ryan propelled himself from his seat into his father’s arms, skinny arms tight around the older man’s waist.
”You’re going to get it now. He’s been talking non stop about his new friend since he got home.” His mother petted Ryan’s head gently before continuing cooking, the gentle aroma of spices filling the kitchen space, and the nooks and crannies that the spicy smell couldn’t reach was filled with the sounds of Ryan’s awestruck voice as he repeated what he’d barely finished telling his mom.

Date: 2006-12-15 01:39 pm (UTC)I agree with you on the complete role reversal here, I mean you see a lot of dominant Ryan and shyer Colin because that's they way they hold themselves in the public eye.
But I figured that because Ryan is younger then Colin and just starting school he'd be completely terrified and Colin's been settled in for like two years or something so he had to make the first move. (: And yay! Thankyouuuu =D

Date: 2006-12-15 11:54 pm (UTC)Honestly because there is so much dominant Ryan and shy Colin I tend to like stories more when the roles are reversed just to you know give it some variety.
