Colin sighed as he placed the phone back on the receiver for what seemed like the hundredth in the past few days. He hadn’t left a message this time; he’d hung up as he heard the start of Ryan’s answering machine message. He got the picture. He wasn’t talking to him.
He shuffled into the kitchen to start making his dinner before a night on patrol of the city. He poured some pasta and water into a pot, turned the heat on and set about making a sauce. This was one of his favourite meals nowadays, quick, easy and quite tasty if he did say so himself.
He was adding the milk gradually when he felt an agonising, stabbing pain in his stomach. He keeled over dropping it on the floor, which splashed all over cupboard doors.
He clutched his stomach and slammed his eyes shut. Then saw something in his mind that made him forget about the pain completely. He saw a restaurant consumed in flames, with half a dozen screaming people trapped inside, all desperately fighting to find a way out. He couldn’t see any of their faces but he had a very strong suspicion that someone important was in there. There was only one person who could have evoked such strong a reaction: Ryan.
He had never seen a vision before, it had always been some kind of feeling, but this was clear and precise. He could almost feel it in his bones, right to his core. Ryan was in danger, and he had to save him!
He ripped his shirt and pants off in record time, and flung himself out the window, racing towards the restaurant the fastest he’d ever moved.
People were gathered outside, having filed out from the front of the restaurant while the rest were trapped at the back. He ran past them straight into the building without a seconds thought.
Smoke billowed out the door, choking him slightly as it rushed towards the open air behind him. He looked around desperately, trying to find anything that would help him bridge his way across the wall of flames that was separating the people from safety. There was a fire extinguisher the other side of the room. He stretched his arm across the heat and grabbed it.
He desperately sprayed foam in the direction of the fire until he reduced it by quite a lot. He tossed the empty can aside, grabbed onto a ceiling beam and swung himself over the flames towards the terrified pleas to help.
There were coughs and splutters of people on the floor, who were now scrambling away from the window, towards him. They were probably trying to get the window open further, but it was only open a crack, not enough for a body to get through.
He started to lift the people over the fire to safety, shouting to them to crawl to the entrance as quickly as they could. Soon he ran out of people, and had still not seen Ryan. Could he have been wrong? Or was there maybe a back exit? Though he doubted Ryan would have left anyone behind if there was. He hoped against hope Ryan was alive and well.
“Hello?” He called out into the smoke, venturing further towards the back of the restaurant.
“Over here,” he heard Ryan shout back. His voice came from a couple meters in front of him. He rushed over to find him and his mum huddled under a table. His mum was out cold, and he was cradling her in his arms, his back too weak to lift her out.
“Take her,” he ordered, thrusting her body towards him. Colin didn’t have time to argue, and he knew that was the best thing to do. He pulled her into his arms and ran back outside, jumping over the flames that had grown back since he’d first got there. He handed her over to the paramedics that had arrived.
He turned and headed back towards the fire, ignoring shouts that it was too dangerous to go back in. He scrambled back to the table Ryan was at, quickly. He looked bad, his clothes were covered in black patches, and he had soot on his face. He’d since pulled his jumper to protect his mouth from smoke. He was in the middle of coughing his lungs up and trying to get as low as possible to avoid passing out from smoke inhalation.
He grabbed him, and pulled him over his shoulder into a fireman’s lift.
Knowing he didn’t have much time, he ran over to where the mass of flames was. By that time it looked almost impossible to cross.
He grabbed Ryan’s chest and feet and raised him above his head next to the ceiling away from the scorching flames. They licked his legs as he crossed them, heating the material painfully against his skin.
He finally got him into the bed in the ambulance. It seemed like hours had passed, but in reality it had only been a matter of minutes.
He desperately demanded if he would be ok. Only when the paramedics assured him his friend’s health wasn’t seriously in danger did he calm down.
“Is my mum ok?” Ryan rasped out.
“Everyone’s fine. Your mum, along with all the other people stuck at the back suffered from minor smoke inhalation. We’re confident everyone will make a full recovery”
They both sighed in relief at the news.
Colin had racked up a reputation now of not staying long after he rescued people, and the fire victims were starting to crowd around him to give him their undying gratitude, which was nice, but not what he needed right now.
As they closed the ambulance doors to rush Ryan to the hospital with the rest of them, he launched himself in the direction of home to get changed.
He ignored the answering machine bleeping at him, annoyingly, that he had one new message. He already knew what it would say. He wasn’t sure who it would be from exactly, but whoever it was would be telling him the same thing: Ryan’s in hospital.
He was in normal clothes, and back out the door in record time, hopping into his car, and driving off in search of his best friend.
