Chapter 6

Brad slowly opened his eyes, listening to the rain begin to pound down on the window of his bedroom. The rhythmic sound of the rain’s drizzle mixed with Chip’s soft, slightly nasal snores made Brad smile. What could make this scene better?

Looking to the clock on the wall, he saw it was going on 4. He sighed with contentment, glancing at Chip, who was asleep next to him. Brad smiled, thinking over the past few hours. Chip had been right – how had they lived in the same house for such a long time like that without acting on such emotions?

Chip had this way about him now that Brad had never seen before. He had always been so funny and mocking of everything. Now, he seemed like a different person.

This morning, after Jeff had gotten angry, and then Greg told Brad to lie to Jeff, Chip had woken up. With a sly smile, he motioned Brad back to the couch. Brad chuckled, humoring him as he went back to the couch. The two shared some small talk, but it all quickly ended, for who can talk when your lips are…busy.

The next thing Brad knew, Chip’s legs were quickly being entwined around his waist. As Chip began to kiss him with such force that Brad felt his own lips begin to swell, he with some newfound strength, lifted Chip off the couch and the two started up the stairs, never parting at the lips.

Finally landing on the floor in the upper hallway, Chip unwrapped himself from Brad, shoving him against the wall with such force that Brad felt himself smiling behind the kiss. As the stumbled down the hallway, kisses heating up slowly, lingering from lips to neck, then slowly trailing to a sensitive spot on the collar bone. Chip began to toy with Brad’s shirt before working faster until he just gave up and ripped it off, popping a few buttons along the way.

Both of them now shirtless staggered into Brad’s bedroom, still connected. Brad, feeling something he never had before, yanked Chip over to the bed. As the two feel onto it, they parted for a moment. They smiled at each other knowingly, realizing that this would be something they’d never forget.

Now Brad realized that every moment they spent together was something he wouldn’t forget. And he’d almost lost out on this because he was too stubborn to admit it. He yawned, slowly pulling himself into a sitting position. Grabbing his jeans from the floor, he felt Chip stir next to him.

“Hello there,” Brad said, smiling at Chip as he began to fasten his belt. Chip groaned, pulling the sheet over his head. His hand shot out, motioning for Brad to come back to bed.

Brad laughed, sitting back down on the bed. “I can’t. I have to go talk to Jeff before Greg gets home. Remember? Greg’s going to be home within the hour, and if Jeff is still going crazy about the whole Greg and Ryan thing, I’m a dead man.”

Chip pulled the sheet back. He rolled his eyes at what Brad had said. “I don’t understand why Greg can’t just tell the kid himself. And tell him the truth. He keeps tiptoeing around Jeff as if he’s only a child. But Greg would throw a fit if that was done to him,” he argued.

Brad simply shrugged. “Chip, I do what people ask me to. Right now, Greg doesn’t want to upset Jeff while he has the flu. Greg will tell him when he’s ready to, sooner rather than later hopefully,” Brad explained. Chip grimaced, before sighing. His expression softened. “Don’t look so glum. I’ll be back in a little while.”

He placed a kiss on Chip’s forehead before walking over to his bureau. Grabbing out a black t-shirt, he tried to put together what he was going to say to Jeff, how he was going to explain it all to him.

Jeff and Chip’s door was wide open, so Brad walked in. Jeff was sitting on his bed against a mountain of pillows watching TV. Playing on the TV was a tape of ‘Best Scenes’ from Whose Line.

Brad immediately thought something was up with Jeff because Brad stood there in the room for a good two minutes without Jeff actually realizing he was there. Finally, Jeff turned and said to him, “Oh, hi. I didn’t realize you were here.” He turned the TV off.

Still looking at Jeff strangely, Brad went and sat on Chip’s bed, facing Jeff who pulled the comforter over him. “So, you wanted me to talk to you?” Brad asked. Jeff nodded slowly, sighing.

“Tell me everything.”

Brad thought for a moment. He had to word this exactly, or else Jeff wouldn’t believe him. But when Brad looked up at Jeff and saw he was shivering under the blankets, he put two and two together. Standing up, he placed the back of his palm of Jeff’s forehead.

Brad groaned. Jeff’s fever was really high, which accounted for the slight stumble of words, and sudden loss of all bearings. Brad wasn’t a doctor or anything, but with a temperature like that, hopefully he wouldn’t remember anything said to him.

Shaking his head, Brad felt awful about what he was doing. Jeff deserved to know the truth. Greg and Jeff had been housemates for almost a year now, and had worked together for even longer. Yet Greg was scared to tell him. Almost as if he was scared Jeff would judge him. So now, Brad had to take advantage of Jeff’s slightly pathetic state and lie to him about something that never happened and never would have happened. Every one and their brother knew that Tony was straight.

“Yeah, you wanted to know about Greg and the – how should I put this – the other guy?” Brad started, wincing as he began.

Jeff nodded. “Yeah. You and Greg keep dropping these hints that Greg was once involved with someone, and you all know who it was. I want to know too. I deserve to know as much as anyone.”

“Well, to start at the beginning, it was a long time ago. The third season of Whose Line UK, to be exact, so that would put it to be about…1992.  Britline was still taking off, and us Americans were still blazing our way over there. That was the year Chip and I went over after repeatedly being prodded by Greg and Ryan to come along. Anyway, it was 1992, so Greg was 32. I was 28, and Chip was 27. It was a long time ago,  and Greg was still getting used to his new surrounding after three years. But he had someone that was, in my opinion, that was quite like him that he could turn to, and that was Tony…”

Jeff sat there for a minute before his eyes became wide. “No. No. It would never – he could never…But I always thought – it couldn’t have been…” he began, tripping over his words.

Brad nodded, biting his tongue so that the actual truth wouldn’t come out in a momentary lapse. “I never thought it could happen either. But it went on for a long time. Almost three years. But Tony is a free spirit, and even though Greg knew that, he couldn’t seem to understand that. Tony couldn’t be tied down to one person. So when Greg found out he was also sleeping with Paul, he got angry. There was a battle, which Greg eventually lost. Tony left the show that year, and Greg has still been getting back on his feet. It hit him that hard.”

Jeff sat there, eyes wide open. “This doesn’t make any sense. I had always thought Tony was straight. And Paul…You’re sure it was them?” Jeff asked, raising an eyebrow.

The look on Jeff’s face was so piercing and in desperate need of the truth, Brad had to turn away. He cleared his throat. “Yes. Yes, of course I’m sure. Greg would always call me to tell me what was going on with him. So I would – would never mistake Tony for anyone else.”

Jeff sat there for another moment, staring at Brad with a look of disbelief on his face. It slowly faded away. “Well. If you say so. I mean, you have the first hand knowledge, not me. I was 16 then.” He began to laugh.

Brad nodded, forcing a laugh along. “Yeah, funny, isn’t it?” The smile disappeared off of his face. “So, is that all you wanted to know about Jeff?”

Jeff nodded. “Yeah. I feel a lot better now that I know what’s going on in the house. I hated feeling like I was being kept in the dark the whole time.”

In a bit of a daze, Brad stood up and began to walk to the door. “Okay. Well, if you need something, just holler.”

“Sure. Oh, and Brad?” Jeff said, grabbing the remote from the nightstand table. Brad slowly turned around to face him. “Thanks for being so honest with me.”

Brad muttered a “No problem” out of habit. He walked out of the door and down the hall slightly. Leaning against the wall, he slid down it. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. How could he possibly go from feeling on top of the world to feeling like scum?

He never should’ve lied to Jeff. Jeff had trusted him, and still did. If the roles were switched, Brad would expect the truth as well.

“What is Greg trying to protect him from?” Brad muttered aloud, lifting his head. There was some large reason why Jeff couldn’t know that is was Ryan, and Brad was determined to find out what it was. It was the least he could do after this whole debacle.
