Summary: Ryan as seen through the eyes of someone. You pick who it is.
I knew early on when I met Ryan Stiles that he was something incredibly rare. All around him, adoring glances and awe struck eyes followed his every movement with undisguised glee. He was good. No explanation needed. He was a King and we were of his court.
Of course he always denied it with a minor smile, but his eyes would crinkle in the corners with true pleasure at the flattery. He always said he liked the way I did it better, saying I had a unique knack of owning the stage whenever I stepped on it. Of course I would take a bow, but I knew in my heart it wasn’t true. I just felt like blushing ‘til my head exploded.
I remembered those first heady days watching him, and I realized something that no one else ever noticed.
He was shy.
I remembered throwing my head back in a harsh bray of laughter at the realization, but as the days lengthened and became months and years, I realized it was true. Especially around me.
When I spoke to him, I never saw his eyes, they always pointed to some distant point in space and he never once looked at me directly. I thought it was me. I thought he wasn’t interested in me save from the professional standpoint. I don’t know why, but that single thought made me sad and I remembered crying softly in my dressing room when the show was over. We parted ways for a year.
When I saw him again, my heart seemed torn in two, but I never showed it. That was less than professional. He was the same Ryan I’d met in every way, but changed, too.
His hair was neat and to the point, his clothing more subdued (except of course for his shoes), his sense of humor tempered like a fine sword that cut the audience, and sometimes the rest of us, to the quick. But what I noticed most about this transformation was he finally met my eyes, letting me see them for the first time.
And for the first time it had happened, I knew why I’d cried when the show had been over.
But nothing happened. I never had my happy ending. The show continued for a very long time, and I watched him from afar. Still his friend… always his friend. We followed the show though, all the way to the States where the air was infinitely more relaxed, less suicidal, with just a hint of wistfulness.
The city of dreams, and oh how I dreamed of him.
I soon found a favorite hang out, though it was pretty damn far away. A private little wharf where no one ever went. It was my place to relax, to sip a cold drink or smoke if that’s what I wanted.
I even brought him up here a few times. I suppose that’s how he found me that one day.
The sky had turned orange like it was on fire, the intense rays of the sun diluted, softened and bounced back into the sky in the warm haze of summer rain as it drizzled steadily into the black waters. The clouds covered the sky, keeping away the harsh sun and filtering it, creating that dim glow, and I sank into the rain slick hood of my car, feeling the soft drops of rain as they trickled onto my face and the gentle warmth of the hidden sun.
I lifted a piece of sand smoothed sea-glass. I’d found it the first time I’d ever visited this place and was bored (and crazy) enough to take a dip in the frigid waters. It was exactly the color of Ryan’s eyes when they’d sparkled at me for the first time all those years ago. I looked over at him resting beside me and told him so.
He took it carefully in his long, slender fingers, contemplating it before setting it aside with a smile and curling up on my chest, folding his long, slender body around my smaller frame. I ran fingers through his damp hair, marveling at the drops of water that sparkled like diamonds before they settled in and turned it almost red in the rays of the setting sun. He lifted his head with a sigh as I brushed a delicate kiss across his brow. He tilted his head back, smiling and silently asking for more. He let me brush his cheek with fingers and I was amazed they still trembled… even after all these years as I looked into his sea-glass green eyes.
