Colin
He found me, of course. I’d probably chosen this bar because I knew it was where he would come looking.
We must be quite a sight. The groom and the best man in wrinkled tuxedos, silently downing beers behind a curtain of cigarette smoke.
“I made a lot of people unhappy,” I say finally.
Ryan looks up, waits for me to continue.
I sigh. “It would have been so much simpler. Our families would have been happy. She and I would have been… not unhappy. Now everyone’s miserable.”
Those green eyes stare at me, the hurt showing too plainly.
“Everyone?”
Ryan
“I didn’t mean it that way,” he says tiredly, closing his eyes briefly as if this is all too much to handle. And I guess it is. “God, Ryan, don’t you hate me too.”
Of course I don’t hate him. And I can’t blame him for being upset and confused. He just turned his whole life inside out. For me?
I lay my hand over his, hoping he feels what I’m trying to convey. Forgiveness. Comfort. Love. And hoping for a sign that he hasn’t destroyed himself by loving me.
He doesn’t react. But at least he doesn’t pull away.
