“Hi, this is Colin. I'm obviously busy right now. You know the drill.”

“Colin, it's your long suffering manager here. I need you to call me back asap. I actually mean it this time, it's urgent.”

Colin Mochrie ran a hand through his thinning hair as he listened to the message. The only reason Melanie Lock ever called him was to foist more work on him. The only reason Colin was always reluctant to call her back was that he had a problem saying no to people. As a result he often ended up taking on more work than he actually wanted or needed, much to the chagrin of his friends and family. It was only the unusually serious tone of Melanie's voice that made him pick up the phone and dial her office.

“Good afternoon, Registered Talent, how may I help?” said the voice of a PA, full of forced cheer.

“This is Colin Mochrie calling for Melanie Lock,” Colin said as he shuffled his weight from side to side. He hated telephones.

“One moment Mr. Mochrie, I'll put you through,” the PA said and then Colin was treated to the crisp, somewhat annoyed tones of his manager.

“Colin, what the hell happened?” Melanie demanded. Colin blinked, his concern growing.

“No idea what you're talking about Boss,” he said, trying to keep his tone light.

“No-one's said anything to you?” Melanie asked, then continued without waiting for a reply.  “That's fucking typical, I never liked that Patterson – ”

“Woah,” Colin interrupted before she could gain momentum. “Dan Patterson? Is something going on with Whose Line?” The moments silence that followed made Colin's stomach clench.

“I just got off the phone with Patterson,” his manager's voice was gentle now, it reminded Colin of a parent telling their child that Santa didn't exist. “They're not going to renew your contract for the next series.” At first Colin felt relieved that there was going to be a next series, then the implication of Melanie's words started to sink in.

“...What? They just want me as a fourth seat then?” Colin refused to acknowledge the plea in his voice. He already knew what the answer was going to be.

“They don't want you at all,” Melanie said as gently as she could. Colin closed his eyes and heard the plastic casing of the phone creak as his grip tightened. He could hear an echo of Drew in his head: 'Welcome to Whose Line is it Anyway? The show that gives Colin Mochrie a reason for living'. No more Whose Line, no more improv, no more Ryan. Colin swallowed thickly. The only real time he got to spend with his best friend and lover was during the filming of Whose Line. Those few weeks were always the highlight of Colin's year and he would be damned if he'd let Dan Patterson take it away without a fight.

“Colin? Colin, are you okay?” Melanie's voice sounded worried and Colin wondered how long he'd left her hanging for.

“Set up a meeting with Dan,” Colin said, feeling detached but determined.

“I don't know if that's a good idea.”

“I don't care,” Colin told her. “Set it up. If he wants me gone he's going to have to tell me to my face.” With that Colin put down the phone, noticing as he did so that his hands were shaking. He loved everything about Whose Line. Even the god awful singing games. He'd always known that the British producer wasn't overly fond of him but this was completely unexpected. Without conscious thought Colin was picking up the phone and dialling again.

“Hello?”

“...Hi Pat, it's Colin,” he always felt so awkward talking to Ryan's wife. There had always been a tension between them. “Is Ryan there?”

“No, he's out for the day,” Pat was perfectly polite as always. Colin felt his heart sink.

“Oh. Okay, sorry to have bothered you.”

“Okay, bye bye,” Pat said before hanging up on her husband's paramour, her pert nose wrinkled with distaste. The bedroom door opened and Ryan Stiles poked his head into the room.

“Who was on the phone?” he asked.

“Just a wrong number,” Pat said lightly. She watched with a small smile as Ryan accepted the lie and retreated from the room. Sometimes it was just too easy.

“I've been expecting this visit,” Dan Patterson said as Colin walked into his office. “Take a seat.” Colin dropped into one of the uncomfortable seats opposite Dan, separated by a large desk which was covered in paperwork. Colin's jaw ached from how tightly he had ground his teeth together on the way over.

“You can't expect me to just roll over on this,” Colin said, surprising himself with how calm he sounded. Dan sighed deeply and straightened the papers in front of him.

“Look Colin,” he said. “I know we haven't always seen eye to eye but I am sorry that it's come to this.”

“Oh really?” Colin interrupted, voice brimming with sarcasm. “Come on Dan. You've had it in for me since London. You didn't want me on Whose Line UK, you didn't want me for the US version.”

“Colin - ” Dan tried to interject but the Canadian was on a roll and just carried on regardless.

“You think your comments don't get back to me? That I'm too old, too bald, too boring for a comedy show? If it wasn't for Ryan – ”

“That's enough!” Dan said, banging his hands down on the desk. Colin didn't think he'd ever heard the British man raise his voice before. “I know you all love to make me the villain of the piece but this time you are completely wrong. Maybe I did think all those things five years ago but I'm not an idiot. Your ratings and your fan mail prove the audience love you and I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong.” Colin sank back in his chair, blinking in shock at the unexpected praise.

“Then why the hell am I being axed?” Colin asked in bewilderment. Dan rose to his feet and pulled on his jacket.

“I'm not the only one with the power to get people fired,” he said, moving to stand beside the confused performer. “You want my advice? Find out what you did to piss off Ryan Stiles and fix it. Quickly.” Colin's head jerked as if he'd been slapped and he turned to stare at Dan with wide eyes.

“Ryan?” he said. “You're saying that my best friend, the guy who fought to get me on Whose Line in the first place, had me fired?”

“You get good reviews Colin,” Dan said, sounding tired. “You're a funny guy...but you aren't as funny as Stiles and he's an executive producer to boot. I didn't have a choice.”

“You're lying,” Colin said, hoping like hell that he was right.

“Go talk to your 'friend',” Dan said. “Fix this Colin. If you can't I'll pay your salary for the final week of shooting but I won't want you on set. I'll have Sherwood fill in for you on Monday.” With that Dan left the room, closing the door behind him. Colin sat staring into space. He couldn't believe that Ryan would ever do something like this. Ryan had always been there for Colin. There must have been some sort of misunderstanding, Colin decided, though he wasn't quite sure how it might have taken place. He would just go and see Ryan and then everything would be okay. It had to be.
