Author: [livejournal.com profile] x_carnivale_x
Pairing: Chip/Jeff. And the rest of the cast.
Rating: R/NC17 [violence, homosexuality, graphic description of gore]
Summary: The causes of the accident are still unknown. Neither the official inquest, nor attempts by enthusiastic unofficial investigations have solved the mystery.
Author's Notes: The pictures used in this chapter are the actual police photographs from the real Dyatlov Pass Accident. Which is why I wanted to use them.
Previous Chapters: Chapter One

Colin and Ryan left Los Angeles three days later to head for Russia. They'd scheduled to speak with a sector of the Russian police in charge of search parties about the recovery of the group. The Russian search leaders were instructed to immediately contact the Finnish Helsinki police (as one of the other hikers were Finnish) if there were any discoveries. The Helsinki police also sent out a search group to accompany the natives in the mountain range. Both groups were told to contact Los Angeles district if there were any new developments.

And so it went. For six days. Six. long. grueling. days without so much as a radio glitch or a telephone call. Chip was beginning to lose the last bits of composure he had, and mind you, he hadn't had much during the last six days. He hadn't done anything fun or stupid, he hadn't written any skits or possible routines, his guitar hadn't been touched, and he hadn't even bothered to watch some of his favorite movies (many of which were Jeff's favorites too) since Ryan had called him a week before. Chip honestly couldn't have cared less. It seemed that all he could think about was Jeff. But Ryan hadn't called to update him, nor had Colin, nor had the police, in fact... no one had called. No one.

But finally, after another two days of silence and unease, a call came and then a knock at the door of the house. Two L.A. investigators, a single Helsinki authority, and Ryan and Colin stood before him. There had been a discovery. Two, actually. They'd found the camp site. Nearby that, two bodies. The officers and Ryan and Colin entered the house silently, and everyone awkwardly walked to the living room and sat in uncomfortable silence until the Helsinki officer cleared his throat.

"Um, Chip we've got some pictures from the site if you want to see them. The two bodies found belonged to two others on the trip, neither were Jeff."

Chip felt horrible for breathing a sigh of relief. Two people were dead. And he had been relieved that it wasn't who he thought it was. But what did it matter? That's what people did, they died. Some before others, others after, but no matter when it happened, that was that. That was the end of it. You were tossed into the world, and you did your best to live it, but make no mistake, in the end they would kill you. That was the end of it.

Chip wiped his nose; he was cold again. The Finn leaned forward and handed him the pictures found at the sight.

The tents had been completely abandoned, everything left behind; clothes, bags, cooking utensils, water, food. Everything.

Upon closer inspection of the tents, all of them had been torn open, seemingly from the inside. All the items inside the tents were strewn about haphazardly. The investigators concluded that rather than bother with unzipping the flaps of the tent, the hikers had instead just torn them to get out. But neither Chip, nor anyone else, could fathom why.

The Helsinki officer, who had apparently been physically at the sight said that there were footprints when they found the campsite, since the snow had not been falling the last few days. They had followed them, but found that of the nine sets that had left the camp, all but one cut off completely. The one that did not mysteriously disappear led to one lone body. But there was no picture of this body.

They said the body was hypothermic, and upon first inspection appeared only to have died because of the severe cold. The hiker had run into the cold merely wearing the clothes he'd slept in, as the others had assumably done, as well. There were no signs of external wounds. And though he was decayed, the death seemed like a fairly natural one. The only odd thing, the Helsinki officer said, was that the body was missing its tongue.

Chip felt a chill run down his spine, but before it could run back up, the L.A. officer handed over one final picture. The second body. They had found this body some 150 meters from the first one, with his figure and subsequent blood stains slightly peppered with light snow that the trees above him had shaken off.

This person too was hypothermic, but as the picture clearly showed, his death had been caused by much than a deep chill. The Finnish officer sighed and rubbed his brow, avoiding looking up at Chip, Greg, Ryan, or Colin. The person had suffered a severe chest fracture, he had told them, caused by a force so hard that the entire chest cavity had caved in. After a short pause, he stated that the force of the damage was that equivalent to a car crash. No human could have caused this amount of damage. Chip pushed the picture back across the table quickly. He couldn't bear to look at it anymore. He suddenly felt sick; his stomach churned slightly and he felt his throat tightening, but he didn't throw up. He swallowed thickly and Ryan exhaled slowly.

"No sign of Jeff."

That was all Chip heard. From that point on, his ears stopped listening, and instead he focused on the constant ringing echo in his ears, or was it his head? Blood flowing. Ear cells dying. Enjoy it, while it lasts.... The officers made mention that they had to leave, and Chip heard something about how Ryan and Colin should accompany them so they could further discuss matters regarding the search. Greg stayed behind again to stay with Chip, and while Ryan and Colin leaned over and hugged the brunette tightly, Chip did nothing. He just stared at the ground from his couch as his friends filed out. He had no idea how long he'd been sitting there, or if Greg had been talking to him or not, but eventually, even Greg had retired to bed, leaving Chip alone. Leaving him alone to think. Blood. Flow. Cold. Freeze. Ring... ring. Dying. That's what you did. You died. Make no mistake, they'd kill you in the end.
