True story...one weekend, when I lived in Philly after I'd graduated college, a group of friends from work and I went town to Long Beach Island. I took my board (a seven foot long board strapped to the top of a two seater Honda CRX...passing a COP...and doing 90. And didn't get a ticket! But that's for another day) and was hot to get some action because we'd had a tropical storm blow through two days before and the waves were totally kicking.

So, that morning, me and my board race down to the beach...to find the red flags up. Why? NEEDLES.

Well, I said 'furk that, man' and went in anyway...only to be caught by a wicked undertow AND a riptide. Now, I knew that both would eventually let me go, but god alone only knew where or how far out. So I hopped off the board and tried to swim in with it leashed to me. No dice. Then I spent ten minutes pondering...do I let it go and try to swim in without it? What if I can't make it? Then I don't have anything to float on!

While I was thinking, another idiot like myself got caught in the same currents. We grabbed one another's boards with one hand, paddled like hell with the other, and wound up a mile and a half down the beach.

I never went out under a red flag again.
