Most of the time, Wayne still feels like the new guy.
It's not that they others haven't made him feel welcome, not at all. Colin is especially kind, going out of his way to tell Wayne when he's done well in a game, but Wayne isn't sure if that's because Colin likes him, or just because Colin is a nice guy.
He was surprised when they offered him the permanent seat. Twenty six years old, a virtual unknown, and he gets tapped for a prime time network show. It took a while to sink in. Even now, three seasons in, he's waiting for the other shoe to drop. When he pokes fun at Drew and Drew pretends to get mad, makes jokes about Wayne leaving the show, Wayne laughs, but he's not comfortable until Drew laughs too. Because he's never quite sure.
He knows he's a lucky man. Beautiful wife, great career, great friends. He made it. The proof is everywhere. Someday, he thinks he'll start to believe it.
Good for you! I like this take on him. Especially the uncertainty when Drew makes jokes -- it is hard to know sometimes what's real from what's only meant in fun.
Thanks! I like your Wayne drabble as well; it makes me feel a little sorry for him. Because he just wants to be the nice guy, friendly and approachable and it seems like people won't let him. He winds up feeling weirdly isolated and I like how you drew that.
He usually gives them hugs at the end: as an apology, but also as a thank you for making him look good.
Some of them are embarrassed by what he sings. Others lap it up laughing, basking in their fifteen seconds of fame for as long as it lasts. A few of them flee the stage without even looking at him, but most stay longer than that, if only for the chance of shaking Drew’s hand afterwards.
And always Wayne tries to give them hugs, but a lot of times they won’t hug back.
