Mopping up...
~Wet…feeling water lap against legs that felt boneless... Arms stretched out, one hand clutching at shredded reeds…a curious ringing in his ears… ~ someone knelt beside him speaking words he couldn’t understand. A hand gently covered his eyes, and he felt a sudden pain shoot through his lower back. The voice whispered softly in English, “Rest now.”
“Oh, god, here! Over here!” Warm hands carefully turned him over, brushed the dirt off his face gently. “Hang on, Colin! Dammit, don’t give up now!” He smiled faintly as the world spun away again…
Colin’s eyes opened to a pure white room. An IV was dripping slowly, trailing its way into his arm. He remembered the storm, being dragged (washed overboard?) off the boat… “Ryan…”
“Shhh… It’s all right… Ryan’s back in the States, don’t you remember, Colin?” It was George, his biologist friend. “Man, I thought we were going to lose you! I don’t know how you did it, even with falling overboard, but you managed to find more than we did.” His face was beaming.
“What are you talking about?”
“When we found you, you were as naked as the day you were born, except for this…” George slipped what looked like a large dry cleaning bag out of his briefcase. As it unrolled, it resembled an extra-extra large condom. “This, my dear sir, is evidence of a species of snake previously unknown! It’s a shed snakeskin, Colin! And that’s not even the whole body! But what we have here is almost 20 feet long! I want to name it Mochries Serpens Caeruleus Gigantis – after all, you found it.”
Colin tried to sit up, but stopped as a wave of dizziness swept over him. There was a sharp pain in his shoulder.
“Easy! You got banged up pretty bad when you fell overboard – something managed to get your shoulder, but the doc says there’s no real damage… you got lucky. The local curandero said that you’d been saved by the god of the river.” George shook his head. “You should have seen him, Col –dressed only in a loincloth and an ancient pair of Converse All Stars and looking older than God’s grandfather. He’s the one who found you – wouldn’t let us come close until he’d checked you out.”
Memory fragment – a warm hand, pain… blackness…
