I know how it sounds, to say "our" song is, "No More Soft Food For You." The hell kind of song is that?? I don't even particularly like Aaron Neville. It just, I don't know, suddenly the mood seemed right for...something. We'd played before, joking, laughing, a touch here and there. Was it flirting? I dunno. I do know it was fun. That night, though, the night this game was filmed, something was different. I don't know, just different, okay? Wayne started singing and I looked over and there's my best friend just sitting there enjoying the song. But you know what he made me think of? He reminded me of the, okay, nerdy guy at all the high school dances who'd get up and dance to the song if only he had a partner. And god help me, but I fell for it. I reached out and touched his shoulder, fully expecting him to turn around and give me that "Yeeeees?" look with the eyebrows or something. But he didn't, and next thing I know, we had our arms around each other. On stage. Slow-dancing. Colin tells me now that he really was just enjoying the song, but he does that "puppy dog eyes" thing far too well for me to believe him. Yep. "No More Soft Food For You." Song ended much too soon.
I can just see a story with Col & Ry as old guys, watching this on rerun, and one of them says to the other "They're playing our song." And of course they'd get up and dance in front of the tv, same as they did the first time.
