Ah what the hell. I told myself I wouldn't post this till it was done, but it's so dead in here that I decided to give it a try. I'm not calling this crackfic, because of Claire's challenge. Uber in the Xenaverse means "former life", "future life", or "alternate reality". That'll do for this fic.
It's loosely based on a true story, the story of one Desmond Doss, a Seventh Day Adventist Conscientious Objector during WW2 who was in the army but would not hold nor fire a weapon. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor after the war, presented to him by the President himself, for bravery and valor on the field of battle. He was a field medic who was credited with saving the lives of over one hundred men in his company--men who hated and detested him because he wouldn't handle a weapon. And he didn't save them as a field medic. When they rushed a famous hill in Japan, and got overrun, he was the only uninjured man from his Platoon who stayed on that hill while the rest fled back down it. He personally lowered fifty to seventy five injured American servicemen down that hill on a piece of rope while the Japanese were firing at him. Then he smothered a grenade with his own body and wound up shattering both legs. Rescued from that, he dumped himself off the litter so that another injured serviceman could use it. He then belly crawled, dragging along a severely injured serviceman, three hundred yards through enemy fire and sustained more than 47 shrapnel wounds. And he did all of this without ever once handling nor firing a gun. THAT is bravery.
However, because this story is ALSO a romance, of a sort (I'll leave you to guess--DUH--who the romance is between, I couldn't use religion as a reason for CO status, so I just used the broad outline of his life for this story.
Long intro, huh? Anyway, here's the first piece. Thanks to Raz for her enthusiastic beta reading above and beyond the call of duty. *G*
Oh, and it's written in first person, Greg's POV. It also has some annoying tense changes. You'll find the reason for that at the end. Thanks!
