WL_FANFICTION FRIENDING MEME

With the new season of Whose Line underway and new fans coming in (as well as old ones coming back), we thought this would be the perfect opportunity for us all to get to know each other a little better and maybe gain some new friends along the way. All you have to do is comment below with as much or as little as you want to tell other Whose Line fans about yourself. You may find you have more in common than you thought. :)

And this is for everyone, not just the newbies. Oldies, lurkers, occasional visitors, everyone is welcome to participate! Please don't be shy. ^_^ I've added a template to make things easier. Just copy and paste, and feel free to fill in whichever parts you like. I'll go first. :)

Just a reminder that Trick or Treat stories are due NO LATER than the 29th! That means you have just over a week to write your stories and art and email them to me! Remember that they don't need to be anything huge unless you want them to be. They can be as small as 300 words (and pictures can just be sketches) and that's perfectly okay! But even so, if you find that you don't have time to finish any or all or your pieces, let me know ASAP! ^_^

In other news...

Let's talk about unlocking entries for the Tumblr digest!

It looks like the Tumblr digest is going over well, and that's great! ^_^ We've had some questions about how to unlock your entries from some of our new-to-LJ members. So let's go over that quickly!

I don't know about you, but I'm unable to connect to LJ right now, so I'm going to post this here! :D

It's a random pairing generator I made this morning. I was looking at the advent drabble for today (which is cold hands/nose/feet for those who might want to write it) and I was wondering how to choose which pairing to write with it, then I figured let's let the universe decide!

So I became the universe.

I mean...I made a random pairing generator.

Yeah.

LJ's been down for me for a little over an hour now. Not sure why yet. Not posting the prompt list because I'm failing at doing a cut. :P

And it's back up a little after midnight! Crisis averted. ^_^

Congratulations to everyone nominated, and, of course, to all our winners! It was a close race in so many of the awards this year. There were a number of ties, and also many winning by a single vote! We had so many good stories this year, though, and I think we were all torn on at least a few of them. But without further ado...

Winners Banners under the cut..with a special surprise award... )

And thank you everyone for nominating, voting and most of all for all the wonderful stories you've shared with us over the past year and will continue to write and share with us throughout the next. ^__^

And now for something completely different! I got a bit of concrit concerning the story list this year in that it doesn't include genres, which made things like finding a specifically funny or angsty story difficult. So we're going to be adding genre tags to go along with those we already have.

propsed tags and little more info under the cut )

Thank you again, everyone! And if you spot any mistakes, please let me now, and I'll be sure to fix them right away! ^_^

Just pimping for our sister comm. :) [livejournal.com profile] bythewayiluvyou is having a round robin in February under the theme of "love."

I played in the last one, and they're a lot of fun! Sign ups are over yonder. You do need to be a member to see the post, but it's a great Ryan/Colin community, and if you like Ryan/Colin, then you should definitely join up! ^__^

Hey. ^_^ We've been getting a lot of new blood lately, haven't we? Well, welcome to you all; it's always great to see new faces.

But hey, guess what? In about 2 weeks, it'll be [livejournal.com profile] wl_fanfiction's 5th anniversary. Five years. ^_^ Awesome, huh?

But we want to do something for that! Yay! Sun and I were talking about it back in January...and then we both basically dropped off the face of the Earth. :P We've both been so busy that we really haven't gotten to do any planning, but I would still love to do something for the occasion.

~~~
The one thing we did decide on was a fan favorites list, where everyone would send a list of their 25 (or less) favorite Whose Line stories. And we would compile and tally and come up with a massive best of list. Probably should be stories from the comm since we're celebrating the comm's anniversary, but I think it should be favorite stories of all time.
Now, unlike the awards, this doesn't require any additional reading. You'd really just list off your favorite stories off the top of your head, maybe glance back through the comm to jog your memory, but you wouldn't go reading in depth unless you really wanted to. We'd ask that you give us as many of your favorites as possible (up to 25). This is just for fun, more of a honor to all our authors, but it should be quick and painless to participate, so that'll happen....soon. Yes. :)
~~~

We did want to run another event, but that one never got to the discussion stage, so I'll throw out an idea I have. I was thinking of a sort of a contest. Since we're celebrating the comm's history, and in the spirit of the aforementioned list, I want to challenge people to write a story in the style of their favorite author.

All entries would be sent to a central person and then posted anonymously, and then there would be a vote as to who mimicked their author the best. The winners would get prizes in a similar fashion to Feedback Month.

~~~
So what do you think? Anyone interested in either one?
According to the final tally...we're staying stictly Whose Line for now, though the advertisement of other communities has always been welcome (as long as run by a mod first) and if you want to advertise a story, that's going to follow the same rules. And feel more than free to include a snippet of said story (as long as it's under a cut) to whet our appetites. ^_^
I want to thank everybody who came out and voted and voiced their opinions yesterday. That was a close one, wasn't it? ^_^ We had some great discussions going on. and great points of view from both sides. I think this was a very important moment in this comm's history, and I'm curious to see where the future will take us.
BUT! Have we forgotten? We've got other stuff going on! ^_^
I just wanted to throw a quick reminder out there that THE 2009 STORY LIST IS UP AND WAITING! Nominations don't officially start until this Friday, the 8th (and will run until the...17th, I think), but now is the time to start catching up on that reading. I've started myself, and wow, I missed some great stuff this year. (Seriously, I've got to pimp the Jeff/Josie story. Hot. ^_^)
And don't forget! While you're catching up on your reading, keep track of those comments for FEEDBACK MONTH! Where you can win fabulous prizes just for commenting on a story! Awesome, right? You got to catch up on your reading anyway, right? Might as well get a little something for yourself out of the deal. ^_~
And that's it! I shall see you all again on Friday. ^_^
Reviewing the poll results from the last twenty four hours, it seems to me that the community, like the mods, is generally of two minds about the issue. One of the yes options has consistently gotten the most votes, but, when you add the yes and no options up, the both of them have been neck and neck this whole time, with no edging out yes by a hair.
What this tells me is we can't go in any extreme direction. We can't open up the community to other fiction without upsetting half the populace, but we can't completely discount the idea without upsetting the other half. Therefore, I'm trying to come up with something in between.
(The important paragraph.) I'm reposting the two most lenient options as their own poll. Please vote for which one you would prefer. Alternately, I'm also going to post a third option that I feel is the closest we can come to being smack dab in the middle. Vote yes or no on that option. If the third option gets an overwhelming number of yes votes, we will go in that direction. Otherwise, the winner of the first poll will be the direction we take.
Thank you, everyone, for your participation thus far, and I really hope we can come to a companionable decision. ^_^
A question has arisen as of late as to whether we would allow the posting of a certain non-Whose Line piece of fiction. The particular story I'm referring to is for the show True Jackson, VP, which has Greg in a staring roll, playing a character called Max. There is apparently little to no activity in the community in which this story was originally posted, and the author is looking to get a little more feedback from a crowd that might be interested.
Me and the other mods are of two minds about this. Of your four mods, one is very much against it in that it's not Whose Line fan fiction, plain and simple, while one is very much for it and sees it as being basically the same as any AU fiction, and the other two see both good and bad points about allowing it. As a whole, I believe we were leaning towards allowing this story to be posted, but then where do you go from there? Where do you draw the line?
Honestly, we don't know. The whole thing brings up a lot of concerns about the future of the community, the fear of change but the knowledge that change is sometimes good and even necessary, and in wondering about all this, we got stuck. So we decided that this community was made for the members after all, so what do you guys want to see? Where do you stand on this issue? Any comments would be really helpful. :)
Thanks so much!
Clay
Hey everyone. ^_^ Just popping in to say that I hope everyone's had a wonderful holiday season and to give a little run down on what's going on in the near future.
1. It's awards time again! That's right, the time is quickly arriving for the 4th annual [livejournal.com profile] wl_fanfiction awards! Nominations will start officially...probably around next Friday (the 8th), but unoffically we're starting as soon as the ball drops on New Years Eve! I'm currently compiling the list of eligible stories for the 2009 awards. I'm a good chunk of the way in, but I don't expect to be finished until around Sunday, so stay tuned for that. Use the time between now and the official start of nominations to catch up on that fiction! There have been a lot of damn good stories posted this year, so let's give them the hurrah they deserve!
And speaking of the awards, I want to run the current list of categories by everyone and get some feedback. Do we like them all? Should we take any out? Add anything we may be neglecting? Take a look under the cut for the current awards (which can also be used as a guide while you're reading before official nominations begin) and let us know what you think!
current awards )
2. January will also be feedback month! That's right! Feedback month is back! We figured that as long as everyone's going to be doing lots of reading anyway, you may as well get something more out of it, right? ^_^ Sungreen will be running that, so look for a post from her in the coming days with more details.
3. And last, but certainly not least, April 20, 2010 marks the 5th anniversary of [livejournal.com profile] wl_fanfiction! Woo! Five years! Never thought I'd still be here five years later, but I'm here, and still loving this fandom! ^_^ So let's celebrate in style! We still have a while to go before that, and I'm sure we'll run at least one more event in the mean time, but I wanted to let everyone know that it's coming, and I want to do something really special. I have a few ideas rattling around in my head, but I want to hear what YOU want. Is there an event you'd love to do, but it's never been offered? Is there something we've done in the past that you dearly miss? Throw your ideas at me, anything and everything! We wouldn't be here still if not for YOU guys, so how to you want to celebrate?
IN SHORT. For those who don't want to read the novel I've written. ^_^
1. Nominations for awards start soon. Read up on fic you missed and let me know any changes you'd like to see to the current list of awards.
2. Feedback month! Woo! Anyone have any ideas on the types of prizes they'd like to see?
3. Yay 5th anniversary! What kind of events would we like to see?
I'm talking an honest to goodness, get your gifts on Christmas SS. The original plan was not to have one due to October's event and then NaNo for those who participate in November and then the events we're planning in January, so December was going to be a month off, but if there's interest in doing a secret Santa, let me know and we'll do it. :)
PLEASE ONLY VOTE YES IF YOU PLAN ON PARTICIPATING. The reults should be set up so they're anonymous, but the wording was changed on the poll option since I've last done it so who knows.
With the recent DDoS attacks impeding fandom on LiveJournal (More info here.), I thought it might be best to dust this puppy off and let it be known that it exists. For the moment, I'd like to use this community as a point of communication for news and important posts from the moderators of the LiveJournal community, WL_Fanfiction.
Hopefully this will all pass relatively quickly, rendering this community moot, but just in case, here it is.
Otherwise, there's nothing here for now; we're still at our livejournal counterpart: http://community.livejournal.com/wl_fanfiction/
[identity profile] clayangel.livejournal.com
First of all, we have two new mods, if you didn't know. ^_^ It's been over a month since they were appointed...which really goes to show how badly I need new mods if it's taken me this long to post about it. :P
[livejournal.com profile] sungreen70 and [livejournal.com profile] fbrobey are my new co mods. Together, we're hoping to up the number of events and whatnot that happen in this comm. We're still working out some bugs, but hopefully we'll see much more activity in the future.
And just to get some public opinion on the types of things we have been discussing, let me share with you some of our ideas:
  • We're thinking about bringing back challenges/fic prompts—weekly, monthly, every other week—the frequency hasn't been decided yet, but any feedback from you guys would be much appreciated. Any suggestions for prompts would also be greatly appreciated.
  • Speaking of feedback, some time in the future, we'd like to take another stab at our feedback month. Last may we had an event wherein readers were rewarded for leaving feedback on the stories they read. It's a good way to give new authors and stories a chance, plus there are prizes and everyone likes prizes, so that's probably coming up in the future.
  • There's been discussion of picking up a round robin, or along the same veins, a multiauthored drabble story. Just something we can pass around and share and come up with a finished product that we're all a part of. ^_^
  • Also considering a kissing festival, basically the same as weekly prompts, but this would be about different types of kisses or situations involving kisses. Possibly with awards if we want to go there, but that's up to you guys.
There's more, but I won't talk your ear off, so that's a taste of the kinds of things we've been mulling over. If you guys have any ideas for anything you'd like to see happen in the comm, let us know! ^_^
In other news, Summaries are your friends.
I've said it before, and I'm saying it again: putting a summary in your story header is always a good idea. Peoples' friends lists get crowded. They've got personal journals, maybe a few WL comms, maybe some comms for other fandoms they're in. What's going to make them decide to read YOUR story? Just popping up and saying "Hi, I wrote a story! Read it! Kthxbye." isn't really going to do much for you.
Do you have a fascinating plot? Something you've never seen done in the fandom before? Or do you have this wacky pairing that you really, really want to share with everyone? Is it a fluffy romance? Is a thriller? Is it sci-fi? This kind of information is what's going to draw people to you. When all we're getting is author, title and an lj cut, it's easy to pass by. But if you throw just a little something out there to whet our appetites, maybe, just maybe you'll get a few readers you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
And, as always Please tag your stories.
Yeah, I know, I'll do it for you if you don't. ^_^ But when I tag your stories, chances are I'm missing out on your pairings. I'm a bad mod these days, and I don't have the time to read everything, though I am trying my best to keep the place neat and tidy. So I tag, but I don't know your story like you do, so even if I am doing your tagging for you, at least go back and check and add anything that I may have missed.
If you don't know how to tag, there is a link to that information in the community's profile. In fact, there's a lot of info in the comm's profile, so if you've never taken a look, go ahead. ^___^
[edit] Something just occurred to me. People are in school, yes?
So when do people get out of school? Are we looking at mid may for any college kids and mid June for the highschoolers? Anything different than that? It occurs to me that we're coming up on finals, so it's probably not a good time for any big events, yes? Is there a time when we'd want to do something big? Maybe just to celebrate summer break? ^_^
And that was way longer than I meant it to be, but it needed to be said. ^_^ Peace out.
In other news, Summaries are your friends.
I've said it before, and I'm saying it again: putting a summary in your story header is always a good idea. Peoples' friends lists get crowded. They've got personal journals, maybe a few WL comms, maybe some comms for other fandoms they're in. What's going to make them decide to read YOUR story? Just popping up and saying "Hi, I wrote a story! Read it! Kthxbye." isn't really going to do much for you.
Do you have a fascinating plot? Something you've never seen done in the fandom before? Or do you have this wacky pairing that you really, really want to share with everyone? Is it a fluffy romance? Is a thriller? Is it sci-fi? This kind of information is what's going to draw people to you. When all we're getting is author, title and an lj cut, it's easy to pass by. But if you throw just a little something out there to whet our appetites, maybe, just maybe you'll get a few readers you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
And, as always Please tag your stories.
Yeah, I know, I'll do it for you if you don't. ^_^ But when I tag your stories, chances are I'm missing out on your pairings. I'm a bad mod these days, and I don't have the time to read everything, though I am trying my best to keep the place neat and tidy. So I tag, but I don't know your story like you do, so even if I am doing your tagging for you, at least go back and check and add anything that I may have missed.
If you don't know how to tag, there is a link to that information in the community's profile. In fact, there's a lot of info in the comm's profile, so if you've never taken a look, go ahead. ^___^
[edit] Something just occurred to me. People are in school, yes?
So when do people get out of school? Are we looking at mid may for any college kids and mid June for the highschoolers? Anything different than that? It occurs to me that we're coming up on finals, so it's probably not a good time for any big events, yes? Is there a time when we'd want to do something big? Maybe just to celebrate summer break? ^_^
And that was way longer than I meant it to be, but it needed to be said. ^_^ Peace out.
Due the large amount of original characters popping up lately, I went and made a Greg/OFC pairing tag for anyone interested. (It's usually Greg who gets paired with OFCs, right?) If there's anything else along these lines that we need that I don't know about (Ryan/OFC, Colin/OMC, etc.) give me a shout out. ^_^
I've noticed a lot of new people lately, *waves to everyone* not to mention some fantastic new authors. But I've also noticed that not everyone is tagging. If you're a new author and don't yet have an author tag, that makes sense, but if you need a tag, ASK! ^_^ I may not post a lot anymore, but I'm always monitoring the comm, and if you PM me or even put a shout out in your post, I'll see it and I'll make sure you get what you need. That includes—but is not limited to—author tags, story tags for stories 3 chapters or more and rare pairings/characters that may not yet have their own tags yet.
When I catch tags missing, I often put them in myself, but I'm not going to catch every single one, so it's important that you, the author, make sure you tag your posts.
This place works in part as an archive, and it's only going to work that way if we have methods of searching for stories. If someone reads one of your stories and desperately needs more, then how else will they find it unless they're all tagged, right? ^_^
In short, tagging=good; not tagging=bad. :D
Peace out, yo.
I swear I'll stop soon. ^_^
This is just to let everyone know that the majority of the votes in the layout poll went to layout #1, so I'm going to be changing to that layout for the moment. I'm going to choose a color scheme that's not too horribly different than what we have now only because I have a lot of work to do for the awards, and while I would like for the color scheme to be voted on as well, I don't have the time or energy to create yet another poll at the moment. And I'm sure you're all sick of them. So that'll come later.
Also, concerning the background image: that poll came back with pretty strong results saying that yes, we do want a new background image. I think this deserves a contest.
Hate the background image? Do you know you can do better? Then do it! Submit your images (basically any format is fine) to the mod at clayangel@comcast.net and in two weeks time (that's January 26th) we'll vote for the new background image!
It looks like we're all too lazy to come up with anything new. ^_^ No matter. I haven't had any complaints about the background image since the layout was changed, so I'm thinking we're all good.
And that is all.
Nope. Not all. One more thing. Now that tags are out there in a usable, in your face kind of place, they might be used more. That being the case, if anyone needs a tag for anything, anything at all. Let me know. ^_^ I live to serve.
Same topics as last time, but we're taking it a little further now.
First, the layout:
Here are the suggestions given to me concerning changes to the layout. If in fact it turns out that we will be changing the layout, there'll be a follow up post where we can pick a color scheme. Or maybe we could have a contest. ^_^ Let me know. But for now, like I said, here are the suggestions, see if you like any. The options are links that lead to test page examples.
Which do you like best?
Layout 1
16 (61.5%)
Layout 2
0 (0.0%)
Layout 3
9 (34.6%)
Leave the layout as it is. Tags aren't that important anyway.
1 (3.8%)
Other (please leave comment)
0 (0.0%)
Regardless which option you picked for the last, do you think we should keep the same background image?
Yes
7 (31.8%)
No
15 (68.2%)
To clarify:
Layout 1 would be anything available to basic accounts under Flexible Squares
Layout 2 would be anything available to basic accounts under Smooth Sailing
Layout 3 would be anything available to basic accounts under Style Contest
And now we're heading back to the awards. It looks like there's a good possibility that the other big fiction comms ([livejournal.com profile] bythewayiluvyou, [livejournal.com profile] sherwood_stiles and [livejournal.com profile] wliialove) are going to be participating in the awards, which basically means that any fiction posted to any of those communities will be eligible for nomination. So it'll be a nice, fandom wide event. So that's awesome. It's not definite that they're all participating, but it looks good. ^_^
But before we worry about that, there's the matter of the categories. Here is a list of last year's categories as written by Indy:
Read more... )
Now what I need to know is if we're all happy with keeping the same categories so please take the time to read them over and fill out a little poll. ^_^
[POLL ENDED] Thank you everyone who gave their suggestions.
And I think that's it for now. I'm hoping to open up nominations some time late next week.
Hey. Two things:
1) I'd really like to change the layout of this comm to one where we can see the list of tags on one side just to make things more convenient. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a new layout?
If anyone does have a suggestion, mention the specific layout (and color scheme if you have one in mind, though that's optional) here and once we have a few suggestions, I'll set up a poll and we can vote. You can also mention if you'd like to keep the current background or change it or any other layout suggestions including keeping things just the way they are.
2) Last year we held fiction awards. If there's enough interest, we'll have them again this year. So...
Would you like to have a 2007 wl_fanfiction awards?
Yes
MOD POST
I don't know about you all, but I horribly dislike how disorganized this place can be in as much as that it's difficult to find anything. As the first mod discovered, only she was able to put entries in memories, and believe me...neither she nor I were anywhere near capable of keeping up with that.
However. I'm on another fic comm, and that mod just created a rule where entries must be tagged to make searching easier. It sounds like an absolutely fantastic idea to me. I don't plan on enforcing this rule, but I do think it would benefit everyone. I'm also planning on going back and doing some tagging of my own on fics that have been written in the past year or so (basically things that I know I haven't had time to put in the archive yet).
So what I'm asking is if you all would be so kind as to tag fics, fic challenges, etc., when you post. With things along the lines of author, pairing, rating, "fic" for stories or "challenge" or whatever it is you may be posting in whatever ways that you'd want people to find your posts. Again, not enforcing it, but I can't think of a better way to get new people to read your older fics, right? ^_~
--Clay
P.S. I know I've been lax about enforcing this lately, but it IS stated in the rules that posts must have proper identifying subject lines. Those of you who haven't been following this, please correct that from this point on.
Hello everyone!
Due to my rather hectic schedule and poor memory, I've been accidentaly skipping over fics as they're posted and I haven't been able to add them all to the memories folder. I'm so glad that this community is being used and that everyone likes it, but the posts are just to frequent for me to keep track of. I know Clay hosts many of the fics on her website (which I've now linked as the community website) so if you need to look for a fic, you can most likely find it there. Thanks for understanding!
Howdy everyone!
People have been having issues adding things to the 'memories' section. Turns out, only the mods can do that. :-/ So, after each new post, I'll just have to go and add the new one to the memories. As of now, I've added all our current entries to the memories, so If you want to go check them out and see how it works, go right ahead! :D
Hope that clears up some confusion and worry!
